We ensure living wages to the farms we source from and are commited to life-enhancing projects in coffee-growing regions. More than ten international projects have been completed including tree planting to combat deforestation in Costa Rica, water well installations in Kenya and Tanzania and the construction of an entire primary school was built in Papua New Guinea. Portland Roasting was founded in 1996 and we started with the first company in the United States to do that, let alone in Oregon. Sustainable practices are very important to the Heifman Hotel and to the overall guest experience at my hotel. That is one of the key reasons why I chose Portland Roasting. I was a student at Portland State University where I was lucky enough to get involved in the Earth S We saw first hand the growers kind of initiatives and since we started we've been sourcing direct as much as possible. When we buy direct we go through quite an extensive interview process with our farmers and instantly get involved in their communities. Portland Roasting gives back tremendous amount of time and energy and effort from little small villages in Central and South America all the way back here to our local city, Portland. I don't necessarily expect everyone to have the same values or to have the same commitment but hearing from the customers who buy our coffee that they buy our coffee not just because it's good coffee but because we are people committed to taking care of people. We're a carbon neutral company, we monitor and track everything we do here from our employees coming to work to our product getting to every location wherever we sell worldwide we track everything in between. Each day we bicycle the whole bean down to our hotel and we freshly grind it in our hotel and then serve it for the best in room coffee imaginable and only Portland Roasting can deliver that experience. We're the only coffee company in the world that has some of the top not only sustainability awards but quality awards. For example they won the Best Roaster of the Year award back in 2012 and they were a key factor in bringing the global coffee conference to Portland. I am proud to work for this company in this place and this time because the things that Portland Roasting is doing we are doing not because we think it's going to make us more money but we're doing them because they're the right thing to do. I also started Portland Global Initiatives which is a water based non-profit that focuses on education here locally as well as globally we tackle water needs. I can get excited about waking up in the morning and coming into work because it means that I am going to have my hands not only in great roasted coffee but I'm going to be involved in bettering the lives of the people that we're buying coffee from. In the back of your mind you always know they're saving the world one cup of coffee at a time and I do really appreciate that.
