Okay, so here goes...the name "Calamity Jane's" is absolutely appropriate for my shop. My middle name is Jane, and I am one of those people that is blessed with the gift of actually tripping UP the stairs...or closing the pantry door on my nose (more than once)...or tripping over heavy metal dairy crates in front of customers. So, calamity it is. And unfortunately, one of my daughters has gotten that gene too...(refrigerator door 2: Savannah 0). You get my drift. My pieces all reflect a part of my personality. Sometimes I'm serious, or silly, or joyful, or spiritual, or irreverent. I am unique, and I try to make each item unique too. I want others to feel a connection to those things. I don't expect everyone to like everything I do, because each item is made special. Rarely does a piece go in my shop that I don't love, because I want to love what I do, and I want people to see the love and passion that goes into my creations. If I put something into my shop "as is", it's because I feel like it's perfect just as it is. This business can be crazy, chaotic, and sometimes even competitive, but I've found some people that are just as passionate as I am, and they, along with my clients, support me, rejuvenate me, and inspire me. Saving "old" things brings me joy. Making "new" things out of old always makes me work the ol' noggin, and sometimes I see something that just inspires me. I generally don't start a project until inspiration strikes (ask my husband...it drives him nuts!). I love the satisfaction of a finished product, and even more so when I am proud of what I've accomplished. I learn new things everyday, whether it's how I refuse to give up, or how to use a new tool, or even that one stall of my garage can hold 57 projects at one time (that's just a wild guess, btw...). I love to inspire and empower others to try things they are afraid to do. I want (especially women) others to pick out that paint color that they love and go for it...or say "screw this heirloom that I don't really love...I can make it mine and love it!" I've had great teachers, especially my husband, who is not just a gifted carpenter and handyman, but truly a gift to me. My mom and dad raised me to do for myself, which always helps! I love that every time I get something done, someone in my family wants to keep it. There's no greater compliment than when my kids (16, 14, and 12) say they like what I've done (ask any parent...those ages are brutal!). So, that's me in a (very large) nutshell.
