Did I always thought Oda never explained it, but in the fourth one piece data book, it was revealed that the crossed S in Ace's tattoo stands for Sabo and was a tribute to him. This was also hinted at in the cover of chapter 596, which shows a what if scenario with all three brothers as adults. In this alternate timeline, where Sabo is alive, Ace's tattoo spells Ace. The other letters also symbolize characters, the C stands for Crybaby referring to Luffy, and the E stands for his father, Edward Newgate.
