This woman is the tattoo lady, Meet Lisa. Lisa comes from the Embedda tribe of Southern Panama. For traditional purposes, all of the adults here can be seen with black geometric tattoos on their bodies. But Lisa is by far the most decorated. Tattoos are a symbol of beauty for the Embeddas, which is a technique passed down over centuries. The ink is made from a local fruit and is collected from tall trees. It is not permanent and lasts just a few weeks, but they keep reapplying it on their skin to last a while. These unique tattoos are a source of pride for the Embeddas, setting them apart from the rest. In the past, they used ink as camouflage, but today, they used the tattoos for sunscreen and shampoo. Lisa claims that it gives them shiny and healthy hair filled with minerals. In the Western world, some people associate tattoos with crime and drugs, but in Panama, it's exactly the opposite. It's a symbol of beauty. How's that for a perspective?
