Every year, it is estimated that about 300,000 people are diagnosed with Lyme disease. On February 9, Meteor Inc. , a local tattoo shop, hosted a day of awareness to raise funds for Lyme disease research. WKTV stopped in to learn more. To most, preventing Lyme disease begins and ends with watching out for ticks. However, detection is not always apparent once you've contracted the disease. It may lie dormant for some time, only to present its symptoms after a simple bout with body stressors such as piercing or tattoos. The National Lyme Warrior Project, aided by more than 30 tattoo shops nationwide, is working Grand Rapids, recently held a fundraiser for the project with the goal of not only providing customers with a tat or two, but also knowledge of this potential problem. It's a way for us to give back not just to the community that's our close community, but to a much more larger broad spectr It's not specific. It's not gender specific, race specific, anything. Anybody who gets bit by a tick has the opportunity to get Lyme disease. While Meteor House has not actually witnessed any flare ups of Lyme disease in their customers, they know it's out there. And joining a cause such as this helps to continue the effort of supporting the Grand Rapids tattoo and piercing community.
