Right the hot holiday shopping season malls across the country are closing, but not in Snohomish County. One mall there is not just surviving, it's thriving right now. King Fives Eric Wilkinson joins us from Linwood's Alderwood Mall, where somehow that mall is bucking the national trend. Eric. Right, Here at Alderwood, even the stores that are closing are leading to greater expansion. To survive as an American Mall these days, department stores and pictures with Santa alone just don't cut it. It can't just be about shopping anymore. It's got to be about dining. It's got entertaining. At 40 years old, the Alderwood Mall appears to be in its prime. It recently added a new restaurant. The outdoor shopping village is a hit. Even when the old Sear store went out of business and was torn down, plans are now in the works to add 100,000 square feet of additional retail and 350 apartments built in customers. The mall'senior GM, Jerry Irwin, says this is the future. You don't have to drive to work. You don't have to drive to the mall. You actually can live here, go to dinner and just, The closure of Seattle's Northgate Mall is expected to push shoppers to Linwood. By 2024, they'll be able to get there via light rail from downtown Seattle in just 28 minutes. In fact, light rail construction is already changing the face of the mall and its surroundings. Additional apartments and retail are being built all around. Linwood Economic Development Director David Kleych says that changes everything. I think it's a big game changer. I mean, people want to have the lifestyle of Linwood provides. They want to be close to Seattle, but they want to live in a smaller town and Linwood provides there. As the shoppers rush home with their treasures. A holiday shopping spirit Jerry Irwin believes could go year round. We're in great shape. The future is going to be really bright because. And hopefully it stays that way. This mall employs about 1000 people over the next two years alone. 20 to 25% of America's malls are expected to close in Linwood. Eric Wilkinson, King five news.
