Crossroads Mall is an enclosed shopping mall located in Omaha, Nebraska at the intersection of 72nd and Dodge Streets. Originally opened in 1960 by Omaha's Brandeis department store, the mall has been home to several major chains, including Sears, Dillard's, Younkers and Target. Most of the mall is expected to be demolished in the near future and replaced with a new mixed-use development.
Today, people in Waterloo got to learn what's next for one of the city's retail areas. Crossroads Mall sits in the southeastern part of the city near the intersection of Highway 20 and Interstate 380, the site being redeveloped by ankeny-based developer. And KCRGT and I's Lacey Reeves now joins us in the studio, tells us a little bit more about what's going on in this significant area of Waterloo. Well, Jim, the redeveloped area will be called the Boulevard at Crossroads, an homage to the street name there. The renovation could take anywhere from 5 to 10 years to complete, because the original mall will have to be demolished before construction can even begin. The new area is expected to bring in multiple box stores, as well as areas for dining. The project is also set to include several multi-family living units. This project will once again make Crossroads a destination not only for shopping and entertainment, but for investment, for opportunity, and for pride in our city. Waterloo'story has always been about resilience, reinvention, and community, and today that story continues right here. Developers say the project is taking inspiration from Fort Dodge's Crossroads Mall redevelopment, corridor plaza. Now, crews have some utility work that is set to be completed over the next couple of months, but then will come the demolition, which is expected to last about eight months. Right now, just one business is still open at the mall, Geno's Pizza, and it'set to close in December. In the studio, Lisa Reeves, KCRG, TV9 News.
