New Harbour Mall was an enclosed shopping mall located in Fall River, Massachusetts, United States, at the intersection of Route 24 and Route 81. Opened in 1971, the mall was noted for having once been the only shopping center in the United States to feature rival department store chains Kmart and Walmart as its anchor stores until 2013.HistoryHarbour Mall opened in 1971 with discounters Bradlees and Grant City (the discount division of W.T. Grant) as its anchor stores, the latter of which was converted to Kmart following the 1976 closure of the Grant City chain. Except for the addition of a movie theater in 1984, Harbour Mall remained largely unchanged until a 1993 renovation which added skylights, new entrance canopies, and re-designing of the common mall areas.Bradlees closed its doors in 2001 with the demise of the chain; within a year, Walmart opened up in the former Bradlees space, thus making New Harbour Mall the first shopping center in the United States to feature both Kmart and Walmart.The mall's movie theaters closed in September 2007. Walmart relocated to a new supercenter on Brayton Avenue in Fall River in 2013. The mall closed its doors Jan 2, 2016 to undergo a $50 Million renovation. It will be renamed South Coast Marketplace. Kmart closed in May 2016. South Coast Marketplace is scheduled to open fall 2017 with Market Basket (in the former Kmart) as the new anchor.
More local coverage now on IWITN News Live at 5. We're learning more about plans to revitalize a failing Fall River Shopping Center. Right now, the new Harbor Mall of Route 24 is pretty much empty, but a developer wants to turn it into a major shopping destination. IWITN News reporter Steve Nielsen is live with more on the redevelopment plan. Well, Shannon, if all goes according to plan, that old mall on William S. Canning Boulevard is going to look a whole lot different in just two years. In fact, this morning, Fall River officials joined Cambridge-based development firm CEA Group to announce a $50 million project to turn the new Harbor Mall into an outdoor shopping center. They're going to call it South Coast Plaza. It'll have several shops and restaurants, but developers say the centerpiece is going to be a new multi-screen movie theater, the first in Fall River in years. The city does not have one right now. City officials say that most of the old buildings will be demolished and new ones built up from the ground. These are going to be dramatic changes. This is going to be a really exciting, vibrant new shopping center at the gateway here. Once it's completed, once the stores are all open, we estimate an excess of 1,000 permanent jobs working here at the new South Coast Plaza.
