An adult care center for people with Alzheimer's is opening soon in Chula Vista. It's the first of its kind in the country, replicating a 1950s town. As Ten News reporter Amanda Brandeis learned, the center is a labor of love by many people affected by the disease. Living with Alzheimer's or dementia can be overwhelming and confusing. Now, they can go back in time to a place they know better, or they can hopefully find some peace. Every inch of Glenner Town Square is built with purpose and attention to detail designed to transport you to another time. 2018 is very, very confusing, but when they go back to a time where they still have some memory, which is between the ages of 10 and 30, it brings them a lot of peace and a lot of comfort because they recognize a lot of things. Lisa Tiberski is with the Glenner Center, the nonprofit behind Town Square. She lost her mom five years ago to Alzheimer's and says she would have loved it here. They're using reminiscence therapy to bring people back to a time where their memories are strongest. They'll leave tired, they'll have had a good day, and so they leave tired and then it helps in the evening, so it will help with sleep, which of course will help with mood the next day. I'm grateful. Caregivers Her husband Bill of 55 years was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2009. We met in Baker University, Baldwin City, Kansas in 1961. Sue says being a caregiver is difficult, mentally, physically and emotionally. Her husband is in the later stages of the disease. He doesn't know me, doesn't know our girls, but he does at times he'll recognize my voice and he'll say that's my wife. So those are all moments of joy. She hopes Glenner Town Square will help her family and the many others in need. They're going to be loved and treated with dignity and respect. Amanda Brandeis, 10 News. A beautiful place and Glenner Town Square opens next month. Services range from $95 a day to $65 for a half day. Families must first come in for an assessment.
