The LARGEST all-hand-sewn applique flag and banner maker in the nation!
We are here for another episode of The Edge. Today we're taking you on a field trip to Watertown, Massachusetts to New England, Flag and Banner. We came to find out that those cool banners that you see that go up after championships or n We also learned that they're working on a very special project for the Las Vegas Golden Knights during w So they're working on that right now. We're going to go check it out. We want you to come with us. New England Flag and Banner has been in business since 1892. When I bought the company in 2006, the company had actually gone through a difficult time. Were down to four people in the shop. Now we're up to twenty three. In the NHL, we probably do about fifty to sixty percent of the teams in growing. We just did over a couple weeks ago. If you were here, you would have seen all the brand new banners for the Ottawa Senators. Today of course we're working on doing the ones that don't have any champions It all starts with the art department. Typically our customers will send us artwork, we'll send them back some layups. Our art department is run by a guy named Matt Stromer. Matt will work with the customers and process somet The computer then tells there's a pin inside t See there is for the Iowa Wild Mocky team. So he's taken the stencil, he's using Taylor's chalk. In this case it looks Stencil, Taylor's chalk onto the top layer w You can hardly see it but there are blue lines under here that they're going to follow when they sew. And then it comes over here the layout. It comes over the layout depending upon the n They're going to be all layered together, everyt In the case of the banner for the Islanders of course there's many different layers. It's going to be all stapled together. Then it's going to come over to the end of the sewing table. We've got Montreal Canadians, Anaheim Ducks, and Detroit Red Wings are already in here. And then there's the top layer, the applique that we talked about. And these are the chalk lines that when it goes to sewing they're going to fall off. Gotcha. So the next step in the process is sewing. May is using the zigzag mac She's following the chalk lines. T And she's following all the chalk lines. Once t As you can tell most people t In fact what we do is because of the way we follow the stencil is we sew around the letters inside the letters and n I they're not sewn on. It's counterintuitive actually to t Otherwise you'd have to pre-cut all the letters and then how would you line them up. So t Music Do you have a favorite banner that you've made? That's a question that's getting me a lot of fun. The two favorite banners. Probably the two famous banners being a Boston guy that I made and then had the pleasure to go to were the Bruins in 2013. I'm sorry, 2003 actually. I t Red Sox in 2013, the huge one that we grew over the Green Monster. The Bruins in 2011 and the Selfics in 2008. But when it comes to the coolness factor, the retirement banner for Bobby Orr, the retirement banner for Wayne Greski, w So there are certain iconic ones that we do that I they go through and Pubs supports you. They j That's pretty iconic and that's pretty cool. But going to the Bruins, the Red Sox in the Selfics game is all. . . That was pretty cool. Thank you.
