In an effort to clear up any concerns of current and potential customer, we have created a draft of some information that will help with making the decision to bubble with the Byrd’s. As Always with Love ~ Byrd Liquid + Lye + Fat = Soap The chemical reaction between any fat and sodium hydroxide is a saponification reaction. Sodium Hydroxide (Lye):” a white, deliquescent, water-soluble solid, NaOH, usually in the form of lumps, sticks, chips, or pellets, that upon solution in water generates heat: used chiefly in the manufacture of other chemicals, rayon, film, soap, as a laboratory reagent, and in medicine as a caustic.” Oils/Butters/Waxes: Beeswax Emulsifying Wax: “A suspension of small globules of one liquid in a second liquid with which the first will not mix.” Granulated vegetable wax that does not mix with the other oils. Shea Butter Mango Butter Cocoa Butter Rice Bran Oil Olive Oil Coconut Oil Almond Oil Soybean Oil Sunflower Oil Safflower Oil Castor Oil Palm Oil Avocado Oil Jojoba Oil Argan Oil Laurel Berry Oil Liquids: Water Coconut Milk Soy Milk Goat Milk Whipping Cream Beer Aloe Vera Juice/Gel Skin Safe Additives: Tussah Silk: Produced by silk worms- promotes shine, lather, and a silkiness to soap. Colloidal Oatmeal: very finely ground oats used for itchy or dry skin. Minerals: “any of a class of substances occurring in nature, usually comprising inorganic substances, as quartz or feldspar, of definite chemical composition and usually of definite crystal structure, but sometimes also including rocks formed by these substances as well as certain natural products of organic origin, as asphalt or coal.” Vitamins: “any of a group of organic substances essential in small quantities to normal metabolism, found in minute amounts in natural foodstuffs or sometimes produced synthetically: deficiencies of vitamins produce specific disorders.” Mica: “any member of a group of minerals, hydrous silicates of aluminum with other bases, chiefly potassium, magnesium, iron, and lithium, that separate readily into thin, tough, often transparent, and usually elastic laminae; isinglass.” Pigments: “a coloring matter or substance.” Colorants: “something used as a coloring matter; pigment; dye.” Glitter Fragrance Oil: artificially created fragrances and that contain artificial substances. They are specifically designed to mimic the scent of a natural product. Essential Oils: “any of a class of volatile oils obtained from plants, possessing the odor and other characteristic properties of the plant, used chiefly in the manufacture of perfumes, flavors, and pharmaceuticals.” Preservatives (Scrubs & Lotions): I use grapefruit seed extract or vitamin E oil. Polysorbate 80 (Bath Bombs): emulsifier used in pudding, ice cream etc. Used to stabilize color and fragrance. Sugar Honey Ground Spices/Herbs Dried Flowers Stearic Acid: “a colorless, wax like, sparingly water-soluble, odorless solid, C 1 8 H 3 6 O 2, the most common fatty acid, occurring as the glyceride in tallow and other animal fats and in some animal oils: used chiefly in the manufacture of soaps, stearates, candles, cosmetics, and in medicine in suppositories and pill coatings.” Titanium Dioxide: “a white, water-insoluble powder, TiO 2, used chiefly in white pigments, plastics, ceramics, and for delustering synthetic fibers.” Epsom Salt Sea Salt Himalayan Pink Salt Baking Soda (Bath Bombs) Citric Acid (Bath Bombs): “a white, crystalline, water-soluble powder, C 6 H 8 O 7 ?H 2 O, a tribasic acid having a strong acidic taste, an intermediate in the metabolism of carbohydrates occurring in many fruits, especially limes and lemons, obtained chiefly by fermentation of crude sugar or corn sugar: used chiefly in the flavoring of beverages, confections, and pharmaceuticals.” Cream of Tartar: used to make meringue.
