My story... I am a self taught artist. Both my parents were artists and encouraged me to experiment and explore. Along the way, I found that my heart loves to create! I have a love for working with mixed media and multiple textures. I loved textures so much that as a child, often I got in trouble for poking things anywhere we went. the grocery store was wonderful for poking...bread, meat, squeezing bags of chips...hahahah! I deeply believe the true definition of art is anything you chose to create using all facets of your heart and soul. It does not matter if anyone likes it...you still created it...it is still art. I started by making textured blankets for NICU babies at Children's Hospital years ago.Touch is the first sense to be developed by babies, starting in the womb around 4 - 6 weeks. As the baby experiences various types of touch, pathways are created in the baby’s brain from these experiences. Sometimes preemie babies lack that early touch sensation and have to later go through "touch therapy" to help their brains grow and thrive. The blankets also helped a wide range of children with special needs. Based on this theory, I created these blankets to be both convenient and stimulating. They are full of soft, ridged, flannel, bumpy, knitted, furry, and satiny materials to not only help babies form those all important pathways, but also to delight their senses. Fun to cuddle and play with and chew on well into their toddler years! My daughter and niece received the next ones and shortly thereafter Smartalex Creations was born! I absolutely love knowing that a baby is going to love and cuddle my blankets for years until they are nothing but rags. Soon I began creating other items for people of all ages to enjoy while still bringing texture into everything I do. I truly love creating new items that bring smiles to peoples faces, from dream catchers to therapeutic frogs, to silly refrigerator magnets. I have a treasure trove if ideas just waiting their turn to come to fruition. I also LOVE to make blankets for geeky babies. Star Wars, Star Trek, Video Game characters, etc...
