I want to bring blacksmithing out of the dark. Right now the vast majority of the world has no idea that there are even still blacksmiths around. The people who do know about blacksmiths really only know of the minicapacity of reenacting the past or shooing horses. I want to make ancient craft relevant again in the world of modern design. My name is Robert Thomas and I'm a blacksmith. I am also an artist, a designer, a small business owner. I That is the goal of Robert Thomas Iron Design, to continue to use forged metal as a design statement. We try to just stay a step ahead by staying a step behind. I love forging metal. I absolutely love it. We forge because there's no other way to achieve that aesthetic. Everything that we make, we strive to make it in such a way that the only way that thing can be made again is using a fire and a hammer and anvil and just brute force as well as finesse. Anything we make starts as a bar or a plate or a sheet of steel or bronze or iron. In the morning you go out to the steel rack and there's a piece of cold lifeless steel, very square or rectangular, flat. At the end of the day there is something in front of you that's beautiful. My mission is not simply to preserve the past. We're preserving a way of making things that can't be duplicated.
