It's time for the Texas Bucket List Buy of the Week. This week we are in Houston with a hankering for some barbecue on the corner of Henderson and Cain. Had a restaurant called Henderson and Cain. In the historic 6th Ward of Houston, you'll find this neighborhood store attracting all sorts of customers. That includes furry friends. Just looking for someone to throw them a bone. I've never known more dogs and people in one neighborhood in my life. The bulldog is a sight to see man. He's a big guy. You'll see him and he'll just stop and he won't move until he gets a treat. That's the place to sit. Veronica Avila, her brother Jesse and her husband John, started this small business in 2018 and have already cooked up quite the reputation. Some of the best brisket if you've ever had a super good. Barbecue and baked goods. It's a trifecta. Yeah, for sure. And coffee. Being in the food industry wasn't exactly Veronica and John's main goal in life. You see, Veronica was an architect for 15 years. John did accounting, but when they followed their family lineage in food making, Destiny had another destination for the couple. Well, I think we knew when we met that it was going to end in all of this. One way or another. Both do come from families though that were involved in food. Long time ago. And I think that the passion and the love that was in that industry was not necessarily in accounting or architecture. Veronica's grandparents owned a restaurant in El Paso. John's owned a tamale and barbecue joint in Brian. When I walk in and I smell the brisket in my mind, I'm not smelling brisket, but I'm smelling my grandfather's old place in Brian, Texas. And to me, that's Now when John followed his passion, he ended up in Austin and worked side by side with some dude named Aaron and helped establish an icon. I happened to st It was great. It was a great experience. It was a good education for me in food. Almost feel It's pretty cool. Well, I was ready for a sample and Veronica suggested something sizable. We call our five meat plate the pit master. The pit master? I think we're going to do the pit master. All right. Sounds good to me. I mean, why not? Five for five. Well, what are we going to start with? Let'start with the smoked prime angus brisket. We smoke for about 24 hours. That is beautiful. Then comes the pulled pork. Oh yeah, I got to throw a thick piece on there. Yeah, there you go. I'm just now realizing we're going to fill up this whole tray. We got it. Oh boy. I guess he's handing off the ribs. We've got some pork ribs here. We finish things out with some sausage and turkey. Oh, look at that. When the juices are coming out of the turkey as you're slicing it, Or should I say corner? Some people look for girls on the corner. I look for barbecue on the corner. So here we are at the Henderson and Kane General store with a barbecue platter that is not very general. It is particular, particular with smoked meats. Brisket, pulled pork, ribs, sausage, turkey, and all sorts of sides. So we're going to start with the brisket because that's usually the star of the show. But it might not be here. They all might be stars. It smells amazing, looks amazing, cooked amazing, smoked amazing. How many more amazings can there be? Tastes amazing. All those spices come together to make a really good traditional barbecue flavor. The brisket is just From the brisket we're going to go to the pulled pork. Get some big chunks, some little chunks, and some shredded. Ain't no reason to put lipstick on this pig. Go ahead and eat it. I've eaten enough barbecue in my life to concern a cardiologist a few times and this place is incredible and I'll ignore what my cardiologist says if he tells me not to eat here. Man, there is a sweetness to that meat that I have never experienced before. Wow. That is ridiculous. It's kind of extremely hard to resist. Brisket's amazing, pulled pork's amazing, the ribs are amazing, the sausage? Amazing. Out of one out of ten it's And finally we have the turkey. If we keep along the path we've been on there should be no doubt that this is amazing. That is some good gobbler. There's Texas barbecue and then there's really great Texas barbecue and they've got it nailed. Well if you're a little piggy that needs to go to the market for some bodacious barbecue with you happen to be in Houston, Henderson and Kane is well worth a stop on the Texas bucket list. Take a stroll through the Old Six Ward, step in with some barbecue and a little pint on your way in or out. They've just done such a great job not only embracing, making a real fine menu and a real good quality of food, but also being wonderful and dearing people and being interested in the community that they run their business in. We're proud in Texas. Many times there'something to be proud of. We love letting the world know and Texas barbecue is definitely one of those things that I think is the best in the world.
