Finding a home for music for 33 1/3 years.
My name is Dick Rosemont and my partner Dave and I started Flut Black and Circular in September of 1977. I think one of the keys to our longevity is that we're music people first as opposed to business people looking for some sort of business. And my opinion is if you're pay attention you can figure out the business stuff as you go. This building, this particular building was called the 541 building at the time. Now it's called the Campus Town Mall. East Lansing has evolved into more of a college only town. Whereas in the late 60s, early 70s it was more of an integrated community that had a supermarket, a hardware store, a laundromat, movie theaters. And it's pretty much a college only town. There's a few businesses that cater to post college. We're lucky enough to have been here all these years where we do get a fair amount of post college age people. I've been coming here for coming on four years now. I've first stopped in here my freshman year and I've been coming in ever since. The selection they have here is absolutely amazing. Any kind of obscure, weird, strange recording you can find here. I jokingly say that we're not schooled enough in traditional business practices to know that we should have closed But we're lucky. We're small for a music store. We're efficient. We're owner operated. And there's a consistency with that. Our customers are going to see a familiar face here. I know I can get it cheaper at But this is one of the few remaining independent record shops. You got to support places And I dig the ambience. I dig the selection. And I really dig the people at work here. It's always, un And they know exactly what you're talking about all the time. There's consistency. I guess we're lucky. We don't just. . . it's part of our lives. So it's more of a reflection of our interests rather than just coming in, punching a clock, doing whatever and then leaving.
