Interested in visiting the distillery? We have two types of tours available: Behind-the-Scene tours are offered at 3, 4:30 & 6 PM on Saturdays and some Thursday and Friday evenings too. These tours are $15 per person. These tours take you into the back of the distillery, show you the still up close and include an in-depth discussion on how we make our gins and liqueurs. Post tour, you'll have a tasting of all five products with a souvenir shot glass. This tour and tasting is approximately 1-1:15 minutes. We also have Quick Tours for those of you who'd like to drop in, see the facility and taste the products. These quick tours are offered on Thursday and Friday evenings during our open hours. Quick Tours are available on Saturday hours from 2 - 7 PM. While these tours do not include a behind-the-scenes look at the distillery, they also don't require a reservation. Simply come during the open hours! These tours are $10 and include a tasting flight of our five products with a souvenir shot glass.
My name is Chris Furrig and I'm the head distiller and co-founder here of the Durham Distillery in Ajax, Ontario. We are Durham Region's first ever craft distillery and we make award winning spirits using locally sourced products. Putting our distillery in Durham is really important to us just to show people that you can create these great quality products and small batches out here in Durham Region. Durham Region is where I grew up, it's where I live, it's where my family lives today. I'm really connected to this area and I really wanted to be the first distillery out here. The Durham Distillery really came from an idea around wanting to start a business from the ground up because you create something from nothing. Not just from taking the grains, the water and the yeast but creating a brand and an image and making it all come together and tell a story from, hey we have an idea for a vodka to here we have a complete story and a bottle. Mashing is my favorite part of doing this. When we first get to smell the grains heating up and we get to kind of start understanding what that spirit is going to taste Starting from a focus group of one, what do I think that I would find interesting and what would I enjoy drinking? And I think about that I'm probably one in a million so if I'm one in the million there's 800 million other me's out there and if I can get all of them to buy a bottle. So we really start thinking about flavors, we think about consistency and experience and we start thinking about names that will connect you to periods of time. From the flavor of the spirit or the smoothness of the spirit to how the bottle looks to how it all appears on your bar. The goal of Durham Distillery is to create a hundred year business. I want a distillery that's going to be multi-generational. I want my kids, kids, kids to have the option of working here or go off and do whatever they want because I've shown them that you can do anything and put your mind to it.
