Even when the sky is gray, there's one hill in Amador County that screams with color. Well, the history is my family purchased the property in 1887. Every year around the first of spring, history repeats itself on Daffodil Hill. My great-uncle and grandmother were very active in it, and then my parents. 77 years ago, the McLaughlin family opened their garden to the public. Family pretty much just decided, hey, this is kind of cool. Let's plant some more and invite people in. Today, the tradition is kept alive by generations of family members We plant between 10 and 20,000 bulbs a year. The tradition of planting made out of continued without the tradition of spectators. Some have seen decades of blooms. Since probably the 1960s. Bob and Bev Blakely have unearthed some history on the descendants of Daffodil Hill. Bob's aunt passed away, and it was left to us. An old photo alb Probably a great-great-uncle. The men in the black and white pictures may have never planted Daffodils, but at least one of them has a curious past. He went to Alaska, an Alaskan gold rush, and he supposedly made his fortune there. And on a steamship on the way back, he mysteriously disappeared. The Daffodils have their own mysterious history, one that's determined by the weather. We've been open as little as a day. Probably four weekends is the most we've ever gotten. Spectators are urged to come early. One good rain could end the season. And as with tradition, admission is always free. What do you want me to check out next? Did you click?
