The Sub Station is THE oldest eatery at UCR and one of the oldest in the city. Come for a visit and share a great sandwich with some great people!
The Sub Station was founded right here at UCR in February of 1972. Hidden on the backside of campus for our first year, we moved to Bannockburn in the fall of 1973. At the time, Bannockburn was a "brand new" student complex, and UCR had only 6,000 students. Under the same ownership for 40 years, we have built a reputation for tasty East Coast subs and great employees. Owner Richard Munio grew up a Jersey Boy, and came out west for college in Colorado and then Chico State. He was drafted for the Vietnam war and served for 12 months. He returned home to grow a huge, bodacious afro (you've gotta see these pics in the store!) and shortly thereafter opened The Sub Station along with a fellow Chico State grad. Everything you see here is original... the tables you sit at and the benches you sit on. They were hand made by Rich in 1972, helped along by his dad's great carpenter skills. Each generation of Subbers, male or female, will tell you of THEIR time sanding, varnishing and repeating time after time during our 40+ years. The Sub Station has always been about people... our great employees and YOU, our great and loyal friends. We wouldn't be here if you weren't here. Thank you!!! Come see us and have some fun looking through pictures of "the good old days" and enjoying some great food!
