East scooters are just about everywhere you look in downtown Boise. They're so popular, the city is considering adding more East scooter companies to the mix of downtown traffic. So tonight, a look at East scooters in our continuing series of how to get along in a growing Idaho. You may love them. Yeah, go to and from work with them. Every day? Not every day, but most days. Or not. I t But electric scooters are on a roll in downtown Boise. Three dockless shared transit companies now operate in the city of Boise, with a combined possibility of 750 East scooters available to rent at any given time and on any given day. Just quick, easy. It's really fast and they're pretty cheap. But as downtown Boise becomes more crowded with cars, buses, bicyclists and pedestrians, what are the rules of the road for the two-wheeled electric scooters that can travel as fast as 15 miles per hour? Turns out there aren't many. Two people do a scooter. People that are underage using it. People going the wrong way on a one-way street. When people ride them intoxicated. There are suggestions, though, East scooter companies advise riders to follow local helmet regulations. But in Boise and Idaho, helmets aren't required for East scooter riders or bicyclists. You're not wearing a helmet. I'm not wearing a helmet myself. Shame on me. Sidewalks could be another safety issue among East scooters and pedestrians. Bird tells its users no riding on sidewalks unless local law requires or permits it. In Boise, electric scooters are allowed on sidewalks. They're also allowed on the green belt and on the streets in Boise as long as you follow traffic laws. There's been a couple times I've come up 9th Street and I've had intoxicated people in the middle of the night driving up the wrong way of the street. Over at Boise State, you'll find pedestrian zones. Riders who don't dismount in certain areas face a $25 fine. A lot of people use them at BSU just to go in between classes or to go downtown or just to get around. But no matter how you feel about East scooters, some people get kind of crazy but not that bad. I feel Look for them to stick around in Boise as they're proving to be a viable solution to easing some of the congestion on our roads. Sometimes I just want to get home faster. We asked the city of Boise if they've had very many complaints about East scooters. They said most complaints are about East scooters being left in places that may block access for wheelchairs or just parked in places that are in the way. Boise police can't issue a misdemeanor citation for reckless operation but they say it very rarely happens if ever. My family and I rented East scooters to date downtown Boise. We spent about an hour down there and I could see what she said. Two t One, I will next time wear a helmet because the difference in the pavement, the cracks, I almost lost a couple of times. The other t In and out of traffic. Sometimes it may feel In the words of one local nurse, there's going to be an increase in appointments at neurologists in the next couple of years. Let's hope not. Yeah, I know. Helmets. I t
