Piston & Chain is a community workshop that brings together motorcycle enthusiasts and tinkerers of all styles and skill levels. In its San Francisco location, you’ll find a shared workspace, community tools, special events, mechanical instruction and a rotating carousel of nice bikes.
I've been coming here around five years. I moved to San Francisco, I think January 2015 to start a job. One day I was out walking my dog. She just kind of pulls me into places. We got pulled into the shop here, found out it was a community shop for repairing motorcycles, which was great because I had an Aprilia, an older motorcycle, which was having some sort of electrical problems. For me, it's just kind of relaxing. It's a hobby. Most of my work in my company is thoughts with my brain having to focus on scientific problems, whereas with a motorcycle I'm doing more things with my hands. So I'm working in more of a physical space as opposed to a mental space. And I've learned a lot from this place and I feel that's really great to be able to pass that on to other people.
