I've been on the road for a long time and I'm not sure I really want this little detour. This is a Calimoto special. But I'm kind of anxious to get to my camp. Trying to place the camp. If you watch my video about navigation apps, you'll know I ended up buying Calimoto for a year. Well, I used it on two different long trips this s And things happened that I didn't expect. So stick around and I'll tell you what these were. And what are the three things that I learned about using Calimoto in my real world experience. My name is Peter and I've been riding motorcycles for over 50 years with a little break to raise a family. And I've been camping for as long as I can remember. I'm a retired teacher, so I created this channel to share with you what I know, but more importantly what I'm learning. As I finally have time to make this pass in a more central part of my life. On my Utah trip, I didn't finish where I expected on the first day. So on the second day, I asked Calimoto to help me find a way back to my route. And along the road through Eastern Washington to my location that I wanted to get to in Idaho. So I'm heading out of Quincy towards Idaho more or less. Because I ended up at a place off route due to the road closure yesterday, I haven't really planned where I'm going. So I'm using Calimoto. So I put Calimoto on and pointed it in the direction that I want to go and asked for some moderately twisty route. And here I go. Calimoto shows me my proposed arrival time, which is not going to be accurate because I'm going to stop a few places on the way, but gives me a good idea. Tells me how far to my next turn and my current speed. Well, I'm surprised. I'm actually super pleased with what Calimoto is doing for me. It's taken me through a little bit of back roads. It's given me a verbal direction through my headset. And. . . This is the kind of place where I get lost. I have to keep checking my map. I'm out of the traffic. I probably would have gone down the interstate to get to the next connection. So this is a nice diversion. If you're planning this by Google, Google will take you by the main roads, even when you say avoid highways. It doesn't plan these back roads. You've got to sit down and you've got to work it all out. So I'm really impressed with what Calimoto has done here today. But later in the day, it took me off Idaho 95 under a twisty background, but one where I had to go a lot slower. And that wasn't so much fun because I was hot and tired and I really wanted to get to my campsite. This is my first big lesson. Not all route suggestions are equal. You have to look really carefully at the routes that it's telling you, because sometimes it's taking you on to roads that are a lot slower than the roads you would be going on, even though you might have chosen not to go on the freeway. This was an interesting twisty route, but it added a lot of time to an already long day. A diversion on my seventh day was also very slow, but at least it wasn't as long. I'd be happy. But I think that when it takes you off of the road that's going faster and then takes you on to these 35 mile an hour roads, that's not always what I want. The next time I use Cali Motor to plot a route, I'm going to look at it very carefully to see whether or not it's just going to add time or whether it's really going to add a lot of pleasure to my ride. Cali Motor is good at finding those twisty roads, but it doesn't really have a good way to judge whether or not it's adding time to you that you don't want to have. This leads me to my second lesson. Leaving my campsite on the fourth day, I wanted to go south to Winamucca, Nevada, but Cali Motor had me backtracking all the way up near Boise. I didn'the only reason I can think that Cali Motor plotted that route is because mine included about 20 minutes of interstate, and I had chosen not to do any interstate. But things happen on the road, and you need to adapt. But I didn't even end up following that route that I plotted, and I'll tell you why in a minute. I think the best thing would have been to plot two days from Riggins, Idaho, down to Bryce Canyon, because Cali Motor's route added about 80 kilometers, but a lot of twisties. So that would have been a much more fun ride. Anyway, So things tend to get complicated when you're doing ad hoc planning on the road. And that brings me to the third thing I used about Cali Motor, which is a lesson you can use for everything in life. Pay attention to the details. And that's why I didn't use Cali Motor after I had gone to all the trouble of plotting that trip that day. The error was mine, not Cali Motor's. And the same thing happened to me on my first trip in the s I didn'think about starting Cali Motor as I left my campsite, so I was already on my way before I decided that it was time to turn on Cali Motor. But Cali Motor has two options when you start following a route that's been plotted. And one of them is to start at the beginning, which is the default. And the other is to join on the way. And I didn't notice that I needed to select join on the way. So what happened is Cali Motor wanted me to go back to the beginning. So then I couldn't follow Cali Motor's navigation because the first step was always go back to the beginning. This is the thing I hate about Cali Motor. So one of my complaints is that if you're not at the beginning of the route, it always wants you to go back to the beginning of the route. Anyways, if you watched any of my videos, So I get out there and learn things and learn by doing. I got trips coming up next s I'm not quite sure where I'm going, but I've got a couple. And I got a couple of business trips that I have to take, and I'm going to be able to do them on my motorcycle. So I'm really excited about that. One of the things that Cali Motor does is it has turn-by-turn navigation. So it's giving you directions to your headset as you're riding. And that's really useful. Cali Motor also gives you information about your elevation, how far you've come that day, and other things. But that's a lot of interruptions I found. So after a while of getting annoyed by these interruptions, I discovered that there's an option under the audio to turn off extra information, and that really kept things tighter.
