The oldest family owned Harley dealership in the area. 77 years and still going strong!
Hi, I'm Dean from Spitzies Motorcycle Center and what I wanted to do is give you a little history of our organization here. My father started Spitzies in 1940. He was a motorcycle enthusiast who rode Indians and Harley-Davidson's. Really enjoyed motorcycles. He worked, he had an auto repair garage in Hoffman's, New York, which is between Glenville and Amsterdam. And he saw an ad one day for looking for a Harley-Davidson dealer in the Amsterdam area and he answered the ad and all of a sudden the representative from Harley-Davidson showed him and they talked things over. And with the purchase of two motorcycles at approximately $1100 each and $300 worth of parts and a sign he became a Harley-Davidson dealer in 1940, approximately February 1940. He stayed in that location for about five, six years. The business got bigger and he moved to Scotia, New York, where he met my mother, Joyce, who became one of the mainstays of the business throughout the years. We built our business on the great service reputation and being honest in our dealings with people. My brother Irv, who started in 1940 also as a mechanic for the dealership, he worked right up until 1990. He was 50 years as a Harley-Davidson mechanic, which is quite a legacy in itself. I came along in the 50s and at that time my dad had two stores, one in Scotia and one in Albany, which came together in about 1954 in Colony, where we operated a couple years in Colony and then in 1957 opened the location that most people in the Albany's Connected Area are familiar with. That was in 2129 Central Avenue. We operated there for 41 years, which I grew up with the business. I became a technician. I worked there 24 years as a technician and service manager. When my dad's passing in 2000 and my mom's passing in 1996, I became the owner of Spitzies Motorcycle Center. In doing so, we moved to the present location, which used to be Orange Sob and Mazda, and that's a 1970 Central Avenue. We've been here right up until I'm speaking to you right now. The Harley-Davidson has been dear to us for 72 years right now as a Harley-Davidson dealer. Again, we've operated on honesty, integrity, and servicing the customers of the Capital District area in an honest and reputable manner. Thank you very much.
