Sprint

The wait is over and I finally got my hands on the new Intellivision Sprint being sold by Atari. T I have my hands on an early release of it. It was sent to me from Atari in any ways. I am going to give you my honest thoughts about it. I have an interesting perspective about t And so I am an Intellivision fan and so coming from that lens, that dual lens, t So sit back, relax. Here we go. So here it is. I got to experience this at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo but here is what a retail box looks Pretty awesome. And in the comments, did you grow up with Intellivision? I know there'some fans out there of t At the end it was offered in mail order because the programmers purchased the rights to Intellivision, INTV Corporation and pretty awesome. And a lot of those cool late-release games are on here. 45 different games. I'm going to show the games list on the carousel that's on the actual console. So here's the packaging. I want to go over t Do size comparison. I'm going to be talking about adding ROMs in the format and really a cool looking, I mean it looks A bit, about 20% smaller. It seems Those wireless controllers look awesome. It is, it feels a little bit light. I'm not going to lie. And so it just has a rock c It's the same rock c T You can add your own ROMs w You just put the file on a USB stick, pop it into your Intellivision. It's going to be a lot easier to update. And that is part of the reason why they didn't go the cartridge route as that would have been a lot more complicated to update and would have taken a lot more development time. T So here's that wireless controller. It looks fantastic. It feels great. The controller has a better weight to it than the actual unit. And those buttons are really nice. You're not going to get like a n They really listen to feedback and has a nice feel to it. The aesthetics of the unit are awesome too. I there is a built in reset button by pressing button five and the top left fire button on the player one controller. You can get out of any game and go back to the menu. That's important as It comes with 92 overlays. It does come with an HDMI cable as well as it's important to know does not come with a power brick. And so you can plug t But there is other devices of comparable price that do include that bundled in. I just I'm just kind of a stickler on that. But So there you go. That's a really nice package and I'm going to show you kind of as best as I can the overlays. The overlays are significant. It's a really nice bonus and I'm really glad that they did that. The overlays are compatible with Intellivision original Intellivision units. And I they come in two boxes here. They have a protective film on each of them as well. So I'm just going to lay these out here. So they come have overlays for all the games. I t Check that out. That's a lot of care and detail that went into each of the overlays. The overlays are a little bit different than the original. So there is a different physical difference of that. I t I'm sure added some cost to the unit. But I'm glad that they did that. Here is a comparison to an original Intellivision that I had in the collection. And as you can see maybe 20% maybe a little bit less than that. I know Ben from PlayOn especially with a lot of attention to detail of t And he did a fantastic job of really making it look authentic. I mean, it's look at that. That's an awesome job. And so aesthetically they knocked it out of the park. It really feels And that's cool. I t And I do t You go to a lot of retro shows. There's not much Intellivision and television found. And it's a lot harder to find than the more common and better selling Atari 2600 competitor. So I'm going to take an overlay from Snafu is brand new overlay and compare it to one of the overlays that was included with t And just to show you some of the differences and similarities. I really t Because to me that was Because some in television games require it. Not all in television games require it. But some are more complex. There's more complexities to Intellivision games. And that might cater to some gamers out there. So you can see the difference here. And I they really did a good job at mimicking that original overlay fuel. Especially the controller. Controller feels great. And I'm going to show you some controller options as well. A nice controller option that maybe you didn't know about. I don't So I'm going to show that as somet But that disc controller for the right games is fine. I'm a big fan of that disc controller. The buttons are OK. It just takes some getting used to if you've played a lot of T But rest assured there's an option for it. There's a plan B for that. So when you turn on the system you have to sync the controllers. It talks about that in the instruction sheet that comes with t And it's red to charge. And once it's charged it stops showing red. When it'synced it's blue. And then when it's blinking it needs to sync up and got that good to go. I that's the best part about t As you don't have to deal with a coiled mess of the original. And I was playing from a pretty far distance. So I t But check t You take that USB dongle that you would use for PC. You would have put it into the Sink 1 USB slot in the back. And you can use an Atari 7800 plus controller to move on the carousel and move the action buttons button one and button two you sync it up And I'm just taking the 7800 plus controller that came with the unit I bought on Amazon. And check that out. Fantastic. And so maybe you're not a discontroller and then you can still use the buttons on the Intellivision controller in the event that your game requires that. But then you can use this I'm sure it's compatible with some other controllers. And let's just j T 0. Wanted to show the version of Intellivision that is was sent to me. So as you can see, I want 45 games. And there's a mix of classics, a few new games, including Boulder Dash. I'm going to show that as well. And it's really important you have start games, show controls, favorite sort and options. There's not too many options on video options. The main options are to do 16, 9 or 4, 3 aspect ratio for the actual game. For me, I'm a classic gamer. So I don't want to definitely just keep it on that. And so you can do favorites and all sorts of stuff. But it's really important as we navigate through what do you get with t And so you also have a QR code, w So they scanned each manual in a QR code using your phone, as well as overlays. If you go to the show controls option. And so here's the games hover force, one of my favorite games on Intellivision. I'm a big fan of hover force, mountain skiing, night stalker, pinball. Those are some of my favorite Intellivision games. But there's a lot of some great options here. They are a stadi It's a rare game body slam, super pro wrestling, Thunder Castle, Tower of Doom. Look at that. That's awesome that they had the rights to all these games. And so Boulder Dash is an aftermarket game. And t And I'm sure there's a backstory of why Boulder Dash is on here, maybe the security rights, or maybe they requested it. I don't know. But I'm sure it's cool that they worked out a deal with them. And so if you played classic Boulder Dash, it's a good version of t And from what I hear from the Intellivision community, w They are telling me that is the ideal emulator to use. And so as you go into an options game control options here, you have the overlay and a QR code to a manual that you can check out the full original manual of these games or updated manual. And so however forced being one of my favorite games of all time, it does. It has fairly complex controls. But I love it. It's essentially you're going around taking out enemies, putting out fires, using a map. You are definitely going to be using that Intellivision controller for t It's complex. It was a late release. Absolutely love t It's the first game I fired up. Hover Forces, And it's not in most people's top three for Intellivision, but I'm just I gravitate to t And to me, it's got that Stragi Helicopter game. I wonder if the people of Desert Strike series played Hover Force pinball. I'm a big video pinball fan. And so going back and enjoying and appreciating t And so again, I'm showing I do believe the four three aspect ratio. But t It's well done. And if you're a big video pinball fan, you're going to appreciate these classics. Now, these are Intellivision classics. T So if you're not an Intellivision fan, you may not be into that's what t Or maybe you never got to experience that you were an Atari fan and fans of the Atari era games and you finally want to pick up an Intellivision. Well, here you go. T And But it's they're offering it. They own the rights to Intellivision. Why not? Right? Here's Thunder Castle, another classic that I was a big fan of. And I t And Really glad it's included here. Cool music. And these are the types of games that I appreciate. I'm a big Intellivision fan. And t So can t I don't know. The community is going to figure those t But I wanted to show kind of what t So going back to t And for the limitations of the Intellivision original Intellivision unit, t You can control the moves that your player has when you play a game. It's fairly complex. Now today'standards, it's pretty simple. But And there will be updates to there's talks of having an update recent update, upcoming update so that it can run tutor vision stuff. I would love additional t And here is a timeless classic. And that's Night Stalker. Again, using the game control options, you can see the overlay and the event that you lose the overlays that are included. But Night Stalker is a game that is something that a lot of people are going to remember, No burger time now. So burger time was probably a licensing deal of why it wasn't included. I'm interesting enough, the Atari soft games aren't included yet, but there is a upcoming product, the Intellivision stick. And it'll be interesting to see if they include those Atari soft games on an upcoming product. I have no inside detail. So I have no inside information about that. I just know that there is an Intellivision stick that is going to be offered down the road with upcoming games. I wonder what those special games include. And as well as on their website, they talk about having an adapter be included down the road where you can use your original Intellivision to controllers. So this is Stadi T And These are the types of games that are included on t Now, to add homebrew and aftermarket releases or just ROMs, you just put the USB stick in the back And you plug that in and you have your console turned off. You then turn on the console. These are the file formats that t And here are my games and it works. Voila, just And what's cool is I was able to show the overlays on a carousel screenshots and it was pretty easy to set up. And if I can set it up, you can set it up. It's pretty easy format. And I want to thank Ben for helping me out and play on setting t So t It's not offered on digital yet. I still have to send out my physical releases to people that preordered t I still have some physical releases off available still, but you have to sign up on preorder on Atari age. And so t It was a project that I loved working with Thank you for all the support and really enjoy how there's also a kaboom style level option for people that want to play t So And I want to thank everybody all involved. What do I t I know there's going to be a lot of people to be But As the d Those wireless controllers are awesome and it felt authentic. The console is a little bit light, essentially just running a rock trip. But I the update, I got my console with the day one update, w I don't know when that's going to roll out. But I t It played my homebrews. I You can add ROMs and television ROMs to it with that authentic controller wireless controller.
