Oberweiss found himself with a bit of a milk overload situation on his hands. His cows were feeling extra generous and p But being a clever chap, he decided to sell the excess milk to his neighbors. He became the neighborhood milkman before it was cool. Now, before you start picturing some fancy milk delivery trucks, let me tell you, this was back in the horse-drawn carriage era. Yep, that's right. Mr. Oberweiss was out there on his trusty stee, delivering milk to his customers' doorsteps. Talk about old school service. One can only imagine what those first customers thought when they saw him trotting up with his little cart full of milk bottles. Perhaps they were a bit skeptical at first, but once they tasted the creamy goodness of Oberweiss milk, they were hooked for life. Peter J. Oberweiss may have started as just a neighborly milkman. But little did he know that his simple idea would blossom into a multi-generational family business that is now almost spanned a century. In 1927, Peter took a major leap and bought out half of Bigwood's dairy. He must have seen the growth potential because he continued to deliver milk to his neighbors and soon expanded his customer base. Eventually, he bought out the entire enterprise and renamed it to Oberweiss Dairy. As the business started to take off, Peter'son Joe had to make a tough decision. He had to leave high school to help with the family business. Talk about a true family affair. But it seems Now, don't get me wrong, Oberweiss Dairy has seen its fair share of success. By selling their milk in good old-fashioned glass bottles. That's right. No need for fancy innovations here. According to Oberweiss dairy, their glass bottles have always been the key to keeping their milk fresh and delicious. They insulate better than flimsy cardboard or plastic. But it's not one that many companies have stuck with over the years. Back in the day, dairy companies used to deliver their milk in glass bottles. Unfortunately, those bottles were heavy and fragile, making transport a nightmare. In the 1950s and 1960s, companies decided to move toward plastic bottles, which were lighter and cheaper. Even today, plastic jugs have evolved to be drop-persistent. However, in Canada, the end of the glass bottle era led to the invention of milk bags. This odd trend never caught in the United States. But it's just one more reason to love our neighbors to the north. Oberweiss dairy not only uses glass bottles to keep their milk tasting fresher and lasting longer.
