Salt Wood Co.

Salt Wood Co. designs and makes handcrafted wood furniture from reclaimed wood and finishes with natural or organic materials.

Formed in late 2013 by Vann Cochran, Salt Wood Co is a seasoned team of woodworkers and finishers who create one of a kind handcrafted furniture and boxes from reclaimed wood. Each piece comes with a story born out of the origin of the wood. Recent harvests include heart pine from an old mill in the South Carolina upstate and The Vendue Inn in Charleston. The Vendue material was first used to build a structure in 1780. We have the privilege of giving it a second chance and placing it where it can be passed on for generations. Stay tuned for more news and photos of new offerings.

I'm Laura Jones for Charleston Home and Design Magazine here at our Charleston Fall Home Show, the Downtown Gileard Center. I'm here with Vanna Maria from Saltwood Co. , how are y'all today? We're good and you? Great. Good, thank you. How has this home show experience been for you? Is this your first or second home show with us? It's our first one. It's been good. We've met a lot of people that we wouldn't ordinarily have met. Good. I'm glad to hear it. I am so in love with your stuff from the first time Heather sent me your Instagram page to actually getting to see some of your work in person. But tell those at home who don't know a lot about what Saltwood Co. does and what you do. Well, we make custom furniture and custom barn doors from reclaimed and new wood. A variety of finishes. But the most important thing we do is we sell the story that comes with the wood, especially the reclaimed wood. We hope is that you will end up with a piece that will be passed down for generations. We also can remake wood from people's homes where they've had their grandpa had a barn and they come in to us and bring in their wood and we redesign and give it a second life. So it's really cool to have that story behind the wood. It is amazing. You get to keep something that not exactly functional anymore, but it can be repurposed in new life. It's passed down to your family or kids and however you want to do it. That's great. And say your booth's filled with some of your great work. Tell me a little bit about what we see behind us. These are three barn doors. This one's made out of old oak barn wood. Came from a barn in western part of Virginia. And there apparently are a lot of barns. And from Virginia I can vouch for that. We are covered in barns and old churches. Well the best part about it is that they didn'tear down the barns and repurpose them. They would just sit there and rock. So the wood gets to have another chance and we end up with some others. This is just yellow pine and we use that to make a newer door with a cleaner look with a variety of stains or paints or washes. We can do any kind of color on the yellow pine doors or stain, anything That's amazing. So do I come to your showroom? Do you come to my house? I would say I want to get these throughout my home. How does that process work? For a door you can go to our website and there's a barn door ordering guide. Just click on it, follow the instructions and send it to us and that will give us the information we need to get you a rough price. And then ultimately we will come and measure the opening before we build it. Wow, that's great. I've seen some of your benches and things too. You have quite a diverse array of products, correct? Yep. We can do mantle pieces, floating shelves. Let'see, the porch swinging beds are really popular. Tables. I've gotten to see one of your porch swings in action. I got to go to a home and it is stunning. It is so great. The homeowner was showing me how you put a custom cup holder in just for his. . . Okay, where were you with? Yep. It was gorgeous and he also did coordinating flower boxes as well. That's neat how you can get a whole experience, multiple spaces. Just Well that particular family has bought n I'm just waiting for them to pull the trigger on the dining room table. I want to pull the trigger on the dining room table. I love your work. I was looking at the table you made up front too. The details and the fine finishings are great. How long does it take you to make a piece of roughly? Right now we're about six to eight weeks out. Okay. Perfect. So plenty of time to get that Christmas dining room table all set and ready for you. Yes. And Thanksgiving. I wouldn't wait too long to get an order in for Christmas. Right. Because we're hoping that the impact from the home show is going to keep us busy for a while. Very popular. Absolutely. I think you're going to be flooded but that's just my opinion. And people want to reach out to you. Do you have a showroom? Do you have a website? What's the best way to get in contact with you? Call, write, text or email. I mean we're located in Mount Pleasant on the corner of 41 and 17. We have a showroom and if you come by on any given day you'll see a few pieces that stay there and pieces that are about to be delivered or finished or in some stage or another. Yeah. You can go to Saltwoodco. com or follow us on Instagram, Facebook. We post some of our latest stuff we're making on there so it's kind of cool to check it out. All right. And so I know there's going to be a lot of customers coming your way. If someone doesn't quite know what they want or they just want to get us started, what's your best bit of advice for new customers? Well, if you're moving into a new home, the best advice I can give you is to live in it for a little while so that you'll see what you actually do need as opposed to what you think you might need before you move in. So that is great advice. And That's the best way to get in contact with the correct website. Saltwoodco. com. Perfect. Well, thank you so much for taking the time to chat with me today. I hope you all enjoy the rest of your home show weekend.
