What is up? That's right, they started in Los Angeles not once, but twice successfully. And by the way, Vons also sponsored the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Let's get into it. Vons was originally founded in 1906 by Charles von Dure with $1,200. The first store was called Vons Grossateria and was on the corner of 7th and Figueroa in downtown Los Angeles. Vondere migrated from Illinois and he was originally a grocery delivery boy, w He used innovative techniques to grow and expand and one of those was by becoming the first cash and carry grocer that allowed self-service from the customers. He also leased out space to external produce vendors and butchers, somet By 1929, just prior to the depression, there were 87 Vons locations and Vondere decided to get out of the industry and he sold them all to MacMarr stores. By 1932, MacMarr merged with Safeway and it seemed that Vons would forever be a footnote in grocery store That was until three years later, Vondere'sons, Charles and Will, decided that they wanted to open a new chain of Vons stores in the Los Angeles area. Vondere helped out By 1950, Vons already had 27 locations in Los Angeles. The elder Vondere really is one of the pioneers in the grocery industry. T Grand openings were happening left and right and by 1970, Vons had 128 locations, making it the second largest grocer in Southern California. In 1984, Vons was named the official supermarket for the Olympic games and Vons really became synonymous for food and groceries in LA. It's tough to overstate how big of a coup the 1984 Olympic games are widely considered the most successful of all time and really put the heartbeat of the world in Los Angeles and Vons was at the center of all that. Taking advantage in 1985, they opened pavilions, sort of an upscale Vons. The first location was in Garden Grove. Since then, Vons had a kind of a complicated First, they took over Safeway, then they became independent again, and now they're currently owned by Albertsons. And even though Vons isn't as big as it once was, it now has 190 locations and 44,000 employees. Vons is truly a grocery store at the heart of Los Angeles, twice over.
