R-C-M-P have arrested more than a dozen prolific property offenders after a two-week blitz. Now police say that of those, most of them were repeat offenders and were often targeting critical infrastructure at electricity plants as well as oil and gas sites right across the province. As a result of these crimes, they say that it caused tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage. The dollar amount of what they steal pales in comparison to the damage they caused to the site, the downtime, lack of productivity. Oftentimes these sites can cause safety issues for the workers, for nearby residents. Now while these offenders were targeting property and infrastructure, according to police, it can escalate quickly to other violent offenses and because property crime isn't listed under the new federal bail reform, police are worried that these individuals arrested in the blitz could be released and re-offend.
