Village Artisans Almost 25% of the total rural households were artisans. The distinction between artisans and peasants in a village society was blurred as some people took up both the tasks. This and their families were also involved in craft production activities The villagers remunerated the village crafts persons The land grant usually needed the panchayat's approval. In Bengal, the zamindars usually paid the blacksmiths, carpenters, even goldsmiths a small daily allowance and diet money for their services. At a later stage, it was recognised as the jajmani system. The term much used in the 16th and 17th centuries is in disuse now. A Little Republic Some British officials in the 19th century considered the village as a little republic as the villagers comprised of fraternal partners sharing resources and labour collectively.
