Wendell General Store

I love Wendell with all my heart. Wendell to me has such a charm and such a great feel. We have some of the most wonderful citizens living here. I'd say about seven, eight years ago. Wendell has always done what you call first Friday night and it's where we do the lights and things We have on the first Friday in December a big event where people come out, carolers, Well, somebody came to me and said, oh I wish we had a candy store in town. I went around to local businesses and I said, hey, can I borrow your business for 30 days? Well, I want to put in We opened it up the very first Friday night when the events were going on downtown and we had over a thousand people show up. Well, on the whole we started this Wendell General Store back in April of 2014. When you come into the general store, the first thing I want you to notice is the original ceiling. That ceiling has been here since they first built this building. I get more compliments on that ceiling and our hardwood floor than I do anything. You see all this stuff in here now? Well, there probably wasn't 25% of what was in here now. And so every single month we just kept putting stuff back into it. We just would bring in more merchandise for the community and everything From the Ash County cheese that we have, nobody else sells it to over probably 15 to 20 different local vendors that sells their wares and goods here in our stores. We do have a little bit of everything. All of the jewelry in here is from a local lady, our pottery, another local lady. And then we have gifts, all kinds of gifts from flags to mats to rainbow shoes and just all kinds of other stuff. The thing everybody comes in here for, of course, is the ice cream. We have 24 flavors of ice cream now. And then of course our new ice cream cakes, which has already been a huge hit and they haven't been here that long. This is everything that we just put in to expand our store, to keep it more of a general store. 90% of everything in my store comes from somebody right here in North Carolina or right here in the Windell Zebulin Nightdell area. My staff is amazing. They love the people. They're kind. They're friendly. I have wonderful employees that really give their heart to this place. And I think that's what makes this place so special. You can have four walls, roof and a floor. And you can have stuff to sell people. But when you have employees that really care and really go out of their way to be kind, to the people walking in the door and to the children, that right there to me is everything that the Windell General Store stands for.
