Discover the work of local crafters and artisans from across the Mitten. At Helium Studio, we want to uplift our neighborhood with art.
The most important thing to us is supporting local artists. After all, our shop’s owners are both passionate artisans, making and upcycling jewelry and accessories. So, when we found an opportunity to share our pieces alongside those made by the locals we look up to, we took it. Now we’re inspiring Wayne and the rest of Michigan with our eclectic collection. Whether you’re picking out a piece for your home, finding something to wear for a date night, or you want to learn to make your own mini masterpieces, our gallery is where crafters and community combine.
Hello, this is Kim from Department DIY at Heli This tutorial is for our kit etched glass coasters. You'll receive four or five or six, however many coasters you'd You'll also receive a stencil of your choosing, but the default stencil will be this one that you see here. As you can see, I've opened the stencil and I'm checking to see what designs on the stencil will fit well with these 3 inch by 3 inch coasters. It turns out that the stencils that work the best are just one of this two-pack. These are reusable stencils. You can use them many, many, many times. You can use them with ceramic ink, with chalk paint, a Maker Studio chalk art paint. A Maker Studio is the maker of the stencils and here I am fitting the stencils onto the coasters after I've cut them out from the larger stencil. You can cut them out in pieces and then hang on to them, store them on the white backs. Here I am adhering one of the stencils to one of the coasters. You want to make sure that you get a good tight grip. You don't have any openings. It turns out that I cut one of the little elements a little too close to the edge. When you're using etching cream, you want to make sure you don't have any bleeds. You want to make sure that etching cream doesn't get underneath the stencil because if it does, it will etch and you've lost that sharp design edge of the stencil. Here I am with a paintbrush again from a Maker Studio and the Maker Studio etching cream. I am painting the etching cream onto the stencil. These are stencils that have mesh, which make them reusable. It also means that you have to pounce a bit or force that etching cream down into the stencil. You'll see I'm combining pouncing with painting and I'm looking at the back to see are there any spots that I might have missed. You can see that from the back. I'll do that with each of my stencils. Here is the Joy stencil. One of the benefits of the reusable stencil is that you can peel them off and put them back onto something That's really easy to do and makes that stencil. You get a lot of value out of this set of stencils. Many of the Maker Studio stencils because you can reuse them. Here I am. Here's my fourth coaster and I'making sure that I get the etching cream into all the nooks and crannies of the stencil. When I feel It really doesn't matter if you keep it on more than five minutes. It doesn't etch any more deeply or brightly. Give it five minutes and that's about enough time. You can see that I've added a little plastic container with some water onto the table because when you pull these stencils off, as you see I'm doing here, you want to turn them over with the etching cream side down into the little container because you don't want the etching cream, just like you don't want paint or ceramic ink or whatever your medi Here I am just pulling those stencils off. Here I am after I've washed off the etching cream off of the first two coasters. I've done that process for all four of the coasters and I've gotten some really nice etch. You saw that in the Joy coaster that I was showing you and now I'm going to get it ready to give. Here I am just putting it in a little stack here and with a piece of ribbon. This is something that I had in my stash and this is a piece of wired ribbon. Just tie a simple knot. I didn't even tie a bow because the coasters are pretty enough and the red and white knot bow just kind of sets them off really cute. You can wrap them up however you can wrap them up in paper. You can give them in a little coaster holder if you want to but I think wrapping them up this way and then in a little piece of tissue or in So let me know if you have any questions but the kit is available to you starting now. Thanks.
