Antigone Books

My name is Kate Randall and I'm one of the owners of Antigone Books. There's two owners and I'm one of them. I've been a co-owner since 1990. We're an independent locally owned bookstore. The store has changed a lot. It was, it's 41 years old this year and it started as quite a small store next door to our current space. It started as a strictly feminist bookstore in 1973. It was started by three women and they specialized in books buying about women. The store was that for a long time and we still do have, we do specialize still on a lot of books buying about women, but we also have broadened it quite a bit. So now it is, it's not a general bookstore, but it's kind of, it's more a progressive bookstore is what I would say. And we carry lots of different books. We sort of expand to directions that our customers are interested in. So for instance, we really expanded our Buddhist section when people were really interested and we had a Buddhist book group and that got a lot of interest going. So we'll go different ways depending on what people are interested in. We also carry a lot of non-book things, cards, t-shirts, gifts, pottery, jewelry, music, all of that. And so our business is now about half other things besides books. We have a lot of non-book items and people really enjoy them. One way we kind of describe this store is we have things that will make you think and things that will make you laugh.
