We often think about art as being things that hang on a wall or things that sit on a sculpture stand. Art is actually the interaction between that thing and the viewer. Art happens to people. So the fact that we are able to present works here and allow art to happen, hopefully for our viewers on a daily basis, forever, for free, is what sharing is all about. It's creating the opportunity for experience here at The Fry. The Fry definitely means home for me. I've been coming to this muse I went to high school next door. Used to play hooky here. It's one of the institutions that I think has had a lot to do with my own local immersion in the arts. I am always really grateful for the generosity of The Fry. By generosity I don't mean to me personally, but the generous spirit that comes through in the exhibitions and the programming at The Fry. One of the most important things about The Fry being free means that artists can come to the muse Make it possible for them to make their art so that artists are able to come to the muse Being free gives us a very different relationship to the artist and to the community as a whole. Art gives people an opportunity to imagine where they are currently, where they might want to be in the future. It allows them a space for contemplation. It allows them a space to question their own being. So yes, it certainly empowers them. Art in general reaches way beyond what the object was originally, it appears to be. It reaches out to everybody who sees it, who is part of it, it's being made.
