Right Frame Of Mind

Preparing for the America's Cup is a huge part of the campaign obviously. It goes on for years. It's not just a turn up with your rugby ball and away you go. Culturally it's a massive one for us to get yourself in the right frame of mind to compete well. I think one of the strengths of our team is the people and the banter we go through. There's a lot of piss taking in our team and actual fact for putting ourselves in the right frame of mind and that's a good one to get everyone in the right mood. And I think being relaxed, loose and comfortable, yet really focused is certainly a recipe for success. The key moments in building a winning America's Cup team is just to have a mix of characters. You need your practical jokers to keep it light-hearted. You need your very focused and tense designers that are doing the homework, doing the yards, understanding the equipment and you need people who can keep chilled out when the fire's on you. Agility and strength for a lot of the guys is key to getting around the boat well and being fast and sailing the boat accurately. A decent coffee is always a good way to kick the morning off and put yourself in the right frame of mind. And yeah, at the end of the day you've got to make sure that you're focused and I think mentally preparing for what you're about to do is key. But not overthinking it, you've got to keep fluid and do what comes naturally.
