Hi, I'm Amy Jacobs. It's my pleasure to welcome you to the seventh Georgia Farm to School and Early Care and Education S We are so glad you have joined us. This year's From field trips and workshops to dynamic speakers and quality content, this s This year we have expanded the focus of the s We know that providing access to nutritious meals helps children focus better in the classroom and reduces the risk of chronic diseases throughout their lifetimes. Connecting our youngest learners and their families to local food sources and creating ways for them to enjoy fresh fare can influence their eating habits and improve healthy food access at the earliest stages of development. I am pleased to report that through farm to school programming Georgia has made huge strides over the past several years in expanding students exposure to healthy food. Overall, more than 40 million dollars has been invested in local foods by school districts across the state. 62 percent of school districts are involved in farm to school activities with the average district spending 17 percent of its budget on these projects. 1. 3 million students have participated in farm to school projects to date and almost 1200 school gardens have been established. Though we've made great strides, child food insecurity and obesity persist. Sadly, according to recent reports, 21 percent of Georgia's children live in food insecure households. That's one in five youngsters who don't have consistent access to enough food for an active healthy life. In the obesity rate for Georgia youth ages 10 to 17 is nearly 18. 5 Implementing farm to school programs can address many of these issues. Studies show that every dollar spent on local food can generate up to an additional two dollars and 16 cents in economic activity. That means local food purchases by school districts can lead to over one billion dollars in local economic activity over the course of a school year. So here's my challenge to you during the next two days as you participate in this s Be sure to network with others, absorb the insights from the presenters and make notes on the information you receive. Then take what you've learned back to your schools, centers, communities and businesses and make plans to expand your efforts in farm to school and farm to early care and education so that we can help to provide the scholastic and dietary nourishment our children need to grow healthy and strong. Thank you and enjoy the s
