There are different degree programs, different job offers, different textbooks and even different subreddits for the two fields. The easiest way to explain the difference between the two is to use levels and phases. Urban planning takes more from macro approach, focusing on land use, zoning and a larger urban vision for the development of communities. Urban planners use legal doc Due to the macro approach, urban planning mostly takes place before the more micro approach of urban design. Urban design concerns the concrete design of groups of buildings, neighborhoods and in particular public spaces. It describes the visible and creative aspects of planning. Urban design often goes down through the fine details Unfortunately both terms lack an authoritative textbook definition that most professionals and professors agree on. The lines between the two disciplines are easily blurred. However, both urban planning and urban design are multidisciplinary fields that share similar goals.
