English cabinet maker Thomas Chippendale has been discussed here before, but let's do it again for part 3. Hi, I'm Abby. I'm a fine art and furniture generalist with a master's degree in American Fine and Decorative Art, and the images you see here are just being used for educational purposes. Thomas Chippendale published The Gentleman and Cabinet Makers director in 1754. His designs were extremely popular and would come to be known simply as Chippendale, and it would gradually replace the Queen Anne taste. Its popularity would last until around the 1780s, but all of the styles discussed in this series would go on to experience revivals, as well as reinterpretations beginning in the 19th century. Chippendale was a mix of Gothic, Asian, and French rococo styles. Chairs became more rectangular with square backs, straight styles, rich carvings, and corners that flared out, as seen here. The claw and ball feet are a hallmark of this style. During this time in the American colonies, leisure became more commonplace, so American cabinet makers began to produce tables that were used for playing card games as well as for drinking tea. This is the PAL room in the American Wing at the Metropolitan Muse This 1765 period room is from the Philadelphia home of Samuel PAL. PAL was the last mayor of Philadelphia under British rule, and it is a wonderful example of the American rococo style that became popular thanks to Thomas Chippendale.
