Hand made artisan furniture by Matthew Soule
I am a fourth generation woodworker. Having growth up building tree houses and working with my father in residential construction, my path departed from craftsmanship as I pursued a BA in philosophy and an MA in theology. After my education, I discovered a love for creating original, handmade, quality furniture pieces and other wooden accessories. I enjoy bringing each piece from raw wood to finished product using lasting joinery and quality hardwoods. Contemplative Woodworking is a thoughtful approach to both the process and product. I believe the creative process to be more akin to wonder and discovery than to mathematics. Such things as relationships, leisure, hard work, meditation, and play are essential elements of what makes SouleWork contemplative. I use only domestic hardwoods in all my pieces, being sure the lumber is either sustainably harvested or reclaimed. I use a variety of finishes but primarily oil and wax.
My name is Matthew Sol. I use a little muscle, a little more guts, and a lot of love to create one of a kind studio furniture pieces in Providence, Rhode Island. Growing up, I was always stealing nails and left over wood from my dad to build things in the woods or around the house. But then in the process of growing up, I lost that sense of adventure, and it wasn't until graduate school where I found some healing in my past. That I rediscovered the joy and excitement of using my hands to make beautiful things. I especially love sharing that joy with my clients when I deliver a piece or finish an installation. My hope is to live a simple life, and to hopefully make the world a little more beautiful.
