A Londoner by the name of Rachel Ashwell had a frugal upbringing with a father as antique book dealer and a mother who restored antique dolls, as a child her parents dragged her around to various flea markets. After completing her studies, Rachel began her career in native England as a wardrobe and prop stylist for local television commercials and photo shoots. In the early 80s, at the age of 19, Rachel moved to sunny California near Hollywood. Here is where she eventually meets her husband while working as a stylist for a television and advertising company. They become parents to their daughter Lily and their son Jake. Rachel and her family eventually moved to the city of Malibu. This beachside community became her hometown and it spoke to her soul. Malibu is where Rachel was able to fully gaze at each sunrise and sunset. The sand and the waves were all accessible, right in her backyard. She didn't want to miss the opportunity to live in such a breathtaking atmosphere. The seaside way of life had plenty of nostalgia. The stormy seas, chanting seagulls and the dolphins, became her family'sanctuary and entertainment. Regrettably, it wasn't happily ever after for her marriage and she became a divorced working mom. A normal 9-to-5 impacted her ability to raise her children the way she desired. In hindsight, Rachel had the panache for r Her friends would frequently ask where she had gotten her slipcovers or flea market furniture pieces. Rachel had a knack for scavenging local markets in the Los Angeles area and finding treasures. People soon realized that the market was lacking in this area of vintage furnishing. So in 1989, Rachel opened her first boutique store in the city of Santa Monica. This new business venture allowed her the opportunity to manage her schedule around her obligations to Lily and Jake. And this was the beginning of Shabby Chic. Rachel was now a female entrepreneur, a single mother, a flea market enthusiast, and a scavenger hunter. Shabby Chic became an empire where she aesthetically produces subtle, floral upholstery fabrics, weather-worn furniture, and vintage pieces. All the soft floral upholstery fabrics, every weather-worn furniture, every upholstery for the custom-designed couches, every artisan chandelier, and every vintage piece. Rachel's portfolio is extensive. Between 1999 to 2003, she successfully hosted a television show both on the E! and Style Network called Rachel Ashwell'shabby Chic. In 2004, she purchased a Malibu beach house that appeared on Oprah's website, giving us a tour of her new home. In 2006, she appeared on Oprah's talk show where her Shabby Chic label single-handedly caught the attention of countless viewers. As we say today, it went viral. That same year, she partnered with Target in conjunction with a new label called Simple Shabby Chic that sold exclusively in Target stores. In 2009, after 20 years in business, Rachel filed for bankruptcy. Rachel experienced a setback and goes off course in life. However, Rachel begins her comeback and embarks on the revival of her empire. She brought on investors and joined forces to give Rachel Ashwell, the brand, a new life. Soon after, the reconstructed brand launched reasonably priced collections which were offered on a national scale. In 2010, Rachel continued to reinvent her brand and was one of 10 interior designers highlighted on Oprah's website. That same year, Rachel sold her Malibu property for $3. 55 million. By 2011, Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic brand expands its business overseas in the United Kingdom. She partnered with the House of Fraser offering the Shabby Chic House of Fraser product line. In 2011, Rachel once again j She was a recurring guest at the Inn for many years while making her semi-annual visits to Round Top Texas for their renowned antique fair. The bed and breakfast was located on a 46-acre property, a small town halfway between Austin and Houston, Texas. The hideaway was beautiful with views of the open country. She transformed the hideaway inside out with a bucketful of white paint and a prayer. The rooms at the Inn were filled with decorative riches Sadly, as of 2018, the bed and breakfast permanently closed its doors. Presently, Rachel has closed most of her stores and has a boutique shop, a cute cottage in S The cottage is located on the Wells S Rachel's new cottage sanctuary is filled with all her lovely treasures. Her products are also available online. Rachel Ashwell continues to keep her blog, where she updates her audience on her inspirations and travels. Today, Rachel is a resident of a new Oceanside location called Paradise Cove. She now lives in an expensive mobile home living park in Malibu. This mobile home park is home to some of the most amazing mobile home in the area. Rachel's home is her sanctuary, a place she entertains family and friends. She has incorporated her signature style and all the traits of a picture-perfect haven. Rachel Ashwell is a true pioneer. Some of the opportunities that came along ultimately didn't continue to align with her true destiny. She is a flea market girl by heart. The Rachel Ashwell brand became a huge conglomerate. Too fast, and too quickly. The Rachel Ashwell-Shabby Chic brand is at its advantage when it remains a small to mid-size organization where locations remain uniquely artisan on trendy streets.
