Charlene Deltan was a teenager when she first starred as Lucy Ewing on Dallas, a ratings giant. Dallas was the top 10 show for 7 of its 14 seasons on the air. Charlene was on the cover of magazines and photo shoots, but few knew the family pain she was secretly hiding. I was in the foster care system from the time I was 5 years old to the time I was 8 years old and my mother was mentally ill. Back then it was shock treatments, straight jackets and institutions. They told her that if she ever came near Texas again, they'd kill her. Charlene was one of the 80's biggest TV sex symbols, but behind the fame and glamour, there were scars of a painful childhood, an absent dad and her mother's devastating mental illness. My mom was diagnosed paranoid schizophrenia thinking that the CIA was monitoring her from the television set or that she was being followed or I went from foster home to foster home and from different family relative to family relative. I was left on my own during high school and it was a struggle. She says she suffered mental and physical abuse while in foster care, but there was one happy memory that changed her life. My mother got a little two day furlough from the institution and she was allowed to come and see me and she took me to a movie theater to see the sound of music. I was a little kid sitting there with a mother who was mentally ill, going from one place to the other taking my belongings in a little trash bag and this movie gave me hope. E. T. first sat down with Charlene in 1981. She was newly engaged to country star Johnny Lee who was 12 years older than her. I'm very happy and I'm very, very much in love. The marriage only lasted two years. Her second marriage also ended in divorce. Today Charlene is prepping for a one woman show on the life of the late Tammy Faye Baker while she's dealing with aging in Hollywood. There's always pressure to look a certain way. There was back then of course, So if I gained two pounds it looks The odd thing is getting older I'more relaxed about it. Let the sunshine up, let the sunshine in. Charlene's also using her voice to help others. Tonight in New York she's performing with Seth Rodetsky in Voices for the Voiceless stars for Foster Kids to make their lives a little brighter. These kids need a home. They need someone that they can share their problems with, their joys, their struggles, so it's important. .
