BarnMetals

Rustic metal furniture and design Brad Martinsen

Hello again everyone. Probably wondering why I have all this old metal roofing stood up against the building down here. Well we're planning on a new project. I'm gonna start it today. We're gonna use this metal roofing as a ceiling in our dining room. The dining room is 10 by roughly 10 by 12. It's an inch or two bigger than that each way, but we're figure 10 by 12. So I'm gonna need about 120 square feet of metal roof. And I have nine pieces out. There's one straight up there by itself. Each piece will cover about 20 to 22 inches by the time we lap the joints. So these are at least eight foot tall. Now some of them have some cuts in them Should be enough to do the ceiling. I'm gonna do some more figuring, but I'm pretty sure that will be enough. This is off of an old barn I tore down over 40 years ago and I've kept the metal all these years. Stored it outside for the last few years, which is you can see some more I have right there in that crack. And that's a good way to store this old metal because it makes it rust a little more. Gives it some more character. So let's go inside and I'll show you the ceiling in our dining room where we plan on putting this metal. And here's our dining room where we're going to put the metal ceiling up. Here's the round table that we recently built with the Lazy Susan and we're happy with the way this table turned out. Rita has her Lazy Susan here in the middle that turns. So But here's the ceiling. I'm going to turn this light off. This is from typical popcorn ceiling from the mid 80s. That's when we built the house. We have some pallet wood that we've saved over the last few years. And I'm going to plan on using it for trim. Hopefully we can make that work out. We'll see. I'm going to go out and wash that old metal off and let it dry in the sun today. And then we'll have our metal ready to cut and put up. And just taking a garden hose and washing the metal off. We'll get the one side washed, let it dry and then we'll turn it around and wash the other side. Time to get started on the room. Today I'm going to be taking down the crown molding up at the ceiling. It shouldn't be too big of a job. I think I can just use my pry bar and my hammer to gently get under it. I don't want to mess up the wallpaper so I've got to be kind of careful. This old molding has finished nails. As this was put up in the mid 80s. And just So there we go. Just pry that apart. Three more walls to go. All right this was all one piece here. We've got another joint right here. And that takes care of all the crown molding. Okay I want to kind of show you what we're doing with the metal. We have it laid out in the floor here in the shop. And the 10 foot is that way. 12 foot is from the door toward me. So we've determined we've got enough pallet wood to do the grids in the middle. That's what we've got. That's what they were laid down for. Even though they're haphazard. It just shows us that there's enough of them to do all the metal grids. The outside grids. I'm going to just buy some one before pine. And we'll attach that to the wall up and down. So the wide part will be up and down. Then we'll put the metal up where it'll and it'll fit tighter around the perimeter. And I think we've decided to put just tar paper it's called or felt paper roof underlayment on the ceiling before we put the metal up. We considered painting it. We have some black paint but paint's kind of messy and we don't want to take a chance on dripping and getting it on the wall or the carpet. It's got lots of holes out where the nails back then they were nails and not screws. That'll have a black behind it so you won't see any of those nail holes showing white. Now that I have the crown molding taken down we've decided we're going to change the baseboard and the chair rail molding. So I'll be taking this off too. We're going to be using pine for not only the ceiling but for the chair rail baseboard doorways. So we'ready to put up some new trim in the room. I can probably go ahead and do that without putting the ceiling up because it won't be in the way. That part will be finished. I can do it by myself. And we do have to of course take this light down that's in here and then we've got to move the light over just a little so it'll be centered in the table. Nice beautiful clear day out today so I'm going to be putting the stained sealer on the pine that we'll be using for trim. And before I put the stained sealer on I will take sandpaper and just go over the edges and real light and nothing drastic just to get rid of the sharp edges and the splinters. And here's a pallet wood that we'll be using for the grids to go across the ceiling. Need to stain seal them too. So plenty of wood to be putting the stained sealer on today. All right I'm going to start putting some trim up. I've cut the four pieces for the two doorways, the uprights. We'll get them put up and we'll measure across the top to see what we need for the top piece. I'm using a Raul Brad nailer and I'm using a two and a quarter inch nail. And today I have to remove the plate from the wall switch here and this top electrical box is for the old ceiling cable heat. When we built the house we had called ceiling cable which is wires in the ceiling that heated up and thermostat was right here that told those wires to come on and heat up the room. We used it only year or so and then we put in a heat p Of course they're still in the box and still in the wall but there's no power there so we'll just get us a blank plate and put it over the top of that. And now we'll get our measurement at the top. We're going to extend the top trim about three quarters over on each side and I'm cutting the trim down in a woodworking shop so I just got me a piece of paper right down my measurements and then go cut three or four pieces and bring them back up and nail them up. So that's all the base mold up. Wind is the trim, doorways are trimmed. All we Using this stud finder makes it a lot easier when you're just nailing You can find the stud without doing any measuring. So handy tool. Finished with the molding. So next will be moving that light. All right I got the felt paper put up just stapled it with a hand stapler. As long as it holds long enough for us to get the metal up then we'll be fine. Moved the light over Got it where it's not in the center of the room but it's closer to this side of the room that'll give us more walkway here between our two doors. Next we'll put the trim around the wall at the very top and then we'll cut the metal. All right got all the sealing molding up. So we'ready to put the metal up. That's going to do it for part one of the dining room remodel. We'll see you in part two when we start putting the ceiling up and get this room finished. We hope you've enjoyed this video. If you did hit the Thanks.
