Kansas City's Original Counter-Culture Casbah. Founded on April Fool's Day 1970.
Well, I'm Keith Buchanan. I am the guy who runs this place, Temple Slug. It's a family business. My stepdaddo opened it 38 years ago in 1970. How did Temple Slug get its name? It got its name. In 1970, Bob was looking for a name for the place. He went to the San Francisco gift show and he was still trying to find a name for the store and he read about an outfit in San Francisco that basically they wanted to open a flea market in an abandoned trolley station on Russian Hill in San Francisco. They were going to call it Temple Slug, but the story and the chronicle that Bob read was basically how the deal fell through and he thought that'such a cool name. He was looking for a cool name for the place and he basically appropriated it because he knew it wasn't going to be used. A customer came in here and told me that Slug was an acronym for the Sexual League Underground, so that would make us their temple.
