showroommat is the culmination of years of sculptural practice, make shift home solutions and day dreaming. As a designer Mat is interested in aesthetic and efficient solutions to daily life. Simple designs packed with versatile functions. And bowties! Mat’s favorite accessory for men and women. For the last year, Mat’s practice has shifted from narrative based conceptual art to design, with a focus on small furniture and bowties. This may seem like an odd combination, but Mat grew up hanging out in his dad’s basement workshop and mom’s sewing room. He is also old enough to have been required to study both shop class and home ec in middle school. Mat has a BFA in sculpture from the University of Houston and was a founding member of Box13 Art Space. He has exhibited work individually and as part of the collaborative DumpTruck. In Houston Mat’s work has been exhibited at Rudolph Blume Fine Art, HAA Alliance Gallery (then space125gallery) the Joanna and CSAW and he has performed at DiverseWorks and the Houston Public Library. Professionally Mat is employed as the Associate Director for the American Institute of Architects Houston Chapter and Architecture Center Houston. Mat’s home, studio, husband and pets are located in the Northline neighborhood of Houston, TX.
