Ann Cummins and her Divas joined forces with Houston Furniture Bank in 2003 to provide free decorating services to families referred by non-profit assistance agencies throughout the city.
“Decorating Interiors – Volunteers At your Service”,D.I.V.A.S.: a group of Houston Furniture Bank volunteers dedicated to“making empty houses homes” for families in need who have been nominated by their caseworkers. These caring volunteers create home-makeovers from house-hold furnishings which have been donated to Houston Furniture Bank.
No kids on the floor has to do with a vision that Oli had several years ago. And he's very, very passionate about trying to help the underserved, especially the kids. And we know for a fact that there's tens of thousands of kids that sleep on the floor every night or possibly on sofas or chairs or certainly in crowded beds. The most important t Kids that are sleeping on the floor don't arrive at school in a mode that they'ready to learn. And if we can raise the level of education here in our kids in the Houston area, then everybody will benefit. Rather than waiting for others to contribute and donate to us, then we give to c We decided to manufacture our own mattresses, a quality mattress that can last for at least 10 years. Your gift of $150 will provide a c Recently started a manufacturing facility so we can manufacture these mattresses at very low cost and distribute those mattresses to different areas of the city at very low cost. So I t But I don't know how you gauge the value of a mattress. In working in the outreach department, I've seen many families who are struggling and they could be struggling due to not enough income. It could be the loss of support from a family member as it relates to drugs and alcohol. It could be the fact that the mom has to make a decision, And so when they call and ask for support and help and saying, I can't afford to buy furniture, can you help me? I need a sofa, I need a bed for my c My daughter is currently sleeping on an air mattress and I really could use a twin size bed if you have it. So it gives us the privilege to be able to come alongside there was a Johnson family, it was a single father and he called and he said, I'm graduating from the Star of Hope. I'm ready to get into my apartment but I don't have furniture. And all I have right now is a couple of pillows, some sheets, a comforter and I'm going to make my three-year-old daughter a pallet and maybe I can get an air mattress but I was wondering if you could help me miss die with a bed. And I was I'm so glad that you graduated our program successfully but tell me more, tell me more about your family, He said, I just started a new job, t I'm able to pay my rent on time but I'm just not in the place to be able to buy us furniture and I really want my three-year-old daughter to have her own bed. I was And so he and I came here and he was able to pick out a twin-size bunk bed with the Furniture Bank and he was excited. We need people though that can either donate their time, donate money obviously, or with the organizations that they may be involved in w So we're trying to challenge everybody to see if they can help us with t I t We are ready to take t We are all focused on solving t It cannot happen in our city and we'll make it happen. Houston will become the first city in t We have taken care of that.
