Ever wondered how twins are formed? It's not just double the love, it's double the science. Twins come in two main types, identical, monozygotic twins, and fraternal, dizygotic twins. The difference all comes down to how they develop in the womb. Identical twins, a single egg, two lives. Identical twins form when one fertilized egg, zygote, splits into two embryos early in development. Once both embryos come from the same egg and sperm, they share 100% of their DNA, making them genetically identical. The timing of the split determines whether they share a placenta and amniotic sac. If the split happens early, each twin gets their own. If later, they may share these structures. Ferturnal twins, two eggs, two unique siblings. Ferturnal twins occur when two separate eggs are released during ovulation and fertilized by two different sperm.
