This is a queen bee. She is the heart of the hive. She lays up to 2,000 eggs a day. Her pheromones keep the entire colony in sync and without her the hive would fall apart. But what happens when a queen bee dies? Queen bees live around two to three years. When a queen dies, the workers will notice her absence immediately. They'll become restless and stop working normally. The colony will quickly act. They will select some larvae to become the new queen by feeding them royal jelly, a special substance that helps the larva develop into a fertile queen, and in a matter of days, they will hatch. Only one queen can rule the hive. Since bees often raise several potential queens, any rivals must fight to the death, and the last queen standing is crowned the new ruler. Once the new queen is established, she will begin her mating flights and mate with 10 to 20 male bees to store enough sperm for her lifetime egg laying before returning to her original hive.
