My name is Jeff Spugnardi. I build fine furniture in Arlington, Virginia. I love designing fine furniture and building that in 3D and then delivering it to a customer and just seeing their face and how happy they are that something that we created on paper became this 3D object that they can touch and feel and have a bunch of memories on. After I got out of the Marines, I moved to Virginia in 2000 and started building furniture and started doing this full time since 2008. So just The one-on-one chair making process begins when you and I come out to the local kilns in Virginia wine country and pick out the eventual slabs that become your chair. So we're not just picking out whether that's going to be walnut, maple or cherry or some of the major species around here, but we're actually picking out your slabs that will become what eventually is your chair. It's a one-on-one program and even a person of me who I don't really have a lot of talent, he was able to guide me through this process. Many artists are quite frankly a little temperamental, difficult to deal with and they don't Jeff's completely opposite of that. He understands that this is a perfect combination of engineering and art and he guides you through the process. That's why my nickname for him was the Sherpa of furniture making. It was more fun than I thought it was going to be and worth every bit of time I spent with him. My favorite part of the one-on-one chair building process is building relationships with customers. There's a wide range of people who've never picked up a saw to some people who've done some minor remodeling and so initially within the first minute they're extremely intimidated, but we just take this process step by step as this process continues. These people realize that they can build it and they come home and they get so excited and they're so fired up to come here and as the chair making process happens they keep calling and saying what's next? What can we do next? When are we going to do the headrest? When are we going to do the back races? When can we start working on the perfect joinery to join the legs to the seat? These people get so into chair making that it makes me very happy that I'm the chair making Sherpa for them.
