Hello everybody and Today we're going to be making a recipe that is close to or maybe over a hundred years old. Some of you may be familiar with it. We are making old-fas I'm pretty sure I first tried t It is fantastic. It is made from mashed potatoes and peanut butter and the recipe dates back to the Great Depression. As far as I'm aware As many of Let's find out together. So we are using instant mashed potatoes. I was able to pick up a bag of plain unflavored mashed potatoes. I do t I'm sure you can get away with using the buttery home style ones but I just got the original. Now these are the kinds that you need milk and margarine to prepare them but I have seen people make t So I feel Both of these are left over from previous desserts or you can just make the potatoes with water. Then we have powdered sugar. I picked up two bags. I do not know if t If I need to supplement any powdered sugar from out of my own pantry I will certainly let And then last but not least peanut butter just plain creamy peanut butter. The potatoes are $1. 50 and the peanut butter is also $1. 50 now. So we have one, two, three, four ingredients at $1. 25 and two ingredients at $1. 50 making t I have already gone ahead and prepared my instant mashed potatoes because they do need to be cool for t So I made them t I did make them with the milk and margarine and I just made the smallest batch on the package w I'm doing potato candy because I think that this one would make a really fun and unique gift if you're looking for something to put into T Now let me see, let me see exactly how much powdered sugar is in each of these bags. I do anticipate about two cups but I'm going to double check myself. I just think it's helpful to have an idea of exactly how much comes in each of these packages so if you're looking at a recipe So we've got our little scoop of instant mashed potatoes and we're going to add in our powdered sugar. Let'start with half of t We are trying to form a nice dough. T Powdered sugar is kind of an interesting t I'm going to add in pretty much the rest of that first bag. I am considering if I should have gotten three but we'll see if two is enough and then also going to mix that in. So now we can start working in our second bag. I'm just going to go in directly from the bag t Half of the second bag. And it is definitely getting harder to mix and more of a dough consistency. So I do t Add just a bit more. I'm going to save a little bit for rolling. When you start to get to the point where it is tough to mix, you might want to start kneading that powdered sugar in by hand. Instead of an arm workout here, making t But I do t It's not really sticking my hands. I can pick it up, I can handle it. It'still very soft and Super fun consistency. I'm just trying to make sure that there's no cl But I t We're going to grab a sheet of parchment paper. You do need to roll t We're going to add some powdered sugar to our parchment paper and our potato dough. I don't know if I got a big enough sheet of parchment paper. We'll see. A little more powdered sugar on top. And grab yourself any round object that wishes powdered sugar and begin to roll t I'm not quite sure how t I would say that looks pretty good. If I had to guess, t Here's where we bring in our peanut butter. Just plain, creamy peanut butter. And we are going to spread gently a nice t I'm going to leave a little ring or a little ridge on the edge here for sealing these up. So don't go edge to edge. You can go edge to edge on the sides, but leave a little bit on the top and bottom. I didn't use the entire jar of peanut butter. We also only used a very small amount of the mashed potatoes. So with more powdered sugar, you could potentially make a whole second batch of these for just an extra couple bucks. Now we're going to start to roll try not to get in the peanut butter as you do it. So just kind of roll it away from you with the parchment paper and then peel the parchment paper back. It shouldn't stick too much. What it does is food. It's okay. It's meant to be eaten. It doesn't have to be perfect. Okay. And once we've got that whole t At some point, this is We can stretch it out. It's I feel So I had to get a bigger sheet of parchment paper and I've just kind of been slowly stretching and reshaping my candy because when I slice it, I really want it to be So I'm going for about that big. And I t I've pretty much doubled it in length because t I haven't made t So maybe I should have rolled it into a different shape, but also I'm hoping that since I'm stretc But I guess time will tell. Now we need to refrigerate t It looks So I'm going to wrap it in the parchment paper and I'm going to stick t It shouldn't be c It really doesn't seem to c All right, it feels firm. I t So you really don't have to c It's just long enough that you can slice it. Moment of truth. I really hope I still have that cute little swirl. Let'see. I'm going to cut it in the center first. T I need to be too aggressive with it. Oh, it doesn't quite have a swirl. It's okay. It's okay. I'll show you in a second. Let me go through and slice all these. You want to cut them pretty small. How about a quarter of an inch t I'll show you how many we get out of t I'm sure that there are some pieces that are going to be prettier than others. Our half cup of mashed potatoes gave us two, four, six, eight, 10. 42 pieces of candy. I managed to do that pretty perfectly. It's not too bad. Still has a bit of that swirl. There's our peanut butter potato candy. I feel Again, I feel So It might be somet It is an old fas And I t It's just kind of fun. Okay, so as I mentioned, I haven'tried these since middle school. I'm pretty sure we made them in middle school home economics. If you want to know a fun fact about me, it is that when I was in middle school, I took home act and the teacher for home act started a gingerbread house club. We called it rock the house club and we made and competed gingerbread houses at a national level. I was only in it for one year. It started my eighth grade year middle school. So after I competed, I moved on to But we won first place in a national gingerbread house competition. And our theme that we did was we did a Santa's Paradise themed gingerbread house. So we had And So that's your fun fact about me. I am a one time national gingerbread house competition winner. I was 13, but all right, let's try our potato candy, w I'm trying it. I think I remember what it tastes If you've never had potato candy, some of you guys are probably wondering, does it taste No, not at all. Probably no surprise. It'so it's very, very sweet. And that's the kind of the strong flavor that you get is that powdered sugar flavor with that little It's a very rich dessert. You can probably eat But it is a very soft melt in your mouth texture. And on the fifth day of Christmas, Dollar Tree dinners made old fas I hope I might have to take a couple days break because I do have to go out of town. We'll hop back in at day six, probably in one or two days. In the meantime, feel free to spam my comment section with suggestions or t Give me some ideas w I can look at your suggestions and do some brainstorming. I've seen a lot of requests for tiramisu after I did the no bake eclair cake. And I'm the hard part is the w But that is a wrap of day five. I hope I'll see you again in a day or two for day six.
