Family Dollar has been one of the most well-known discount retailers in the U. S. for decades. Super cheap. Along with Dollar General and Dollar Tree, which bought Family Dollar in 2015 for about $9 billion. But now, Dollar Tree is considering selling or spinning off Family Dollar. Over the next few years, Dollar Tree plans to close nearly $1,000 family dollar stores across the country, 600 of which will be closed by early August. Family Dollar is closing down. So what went wrong? Family Dollar. The things you need. Cheap. Dollar stores offer the basic essentials at really low prices. Dollar Tree offers a lot of fun little items Family Dollar historically was more concentrated on grocery and pantry items. Family Dollar opened its first store in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1959. Expanded to 2,000 stores by 1993 and in 2015, Dollar Tree, which was the smallest of the three dollar store companies at the time, beat out its rival Dollar General to acquire Family Dollar. Dollar Tree wanted to expand its presence across the U. S. And Family Dollar had over 8,000 locations at the time of the merger. After the acquisition, Dollar Tree chose not to close many of the underperforming Family Dollar locations. The thinking was at the time that they would invest in store renovations. They would make changes to the layouts of the stores and maybe some other behind the scenes efforts to make Family Dollar stores more profitable. But it hasn't really worked out in the way they hoped. Many of these stores. One of Family Dollar's biggest challenges? Location. Justice Department fined Family Dollar $41. 7 million dollars for distributing food, drugs, medical devices and cosmetics from a rat-infested warehouse in West Memphis, Arkansas, the largest ever financial criminal penalty in a food safety case. Conditions observed during the inspection included live rodents, dead rodents in various states of decay, rodent feces and urine, evidence of nigh nesting and rodent odors throughout the facility, dead birds and bird droppings and products stored in conditions that did not protect them against contamination. Dollar Tree is investing more than $100 million in this Arkansas facility and plans to restart operations by this fall. Family Dollar has also struggled recently because of inflation, which has prompted lower-income shoppers to cut back on spending. Another benefit is given to people who qualify for food assistance.
