Have you ever had a macaron? Not a macaron, that's a coconut cookie. A macaron, the delicate brightly colored French cookie. Ha. They are difficult to make but delicious to enjoy and there's a boutique bakery and ham trammick that serves up some really unique flavors and get this, the owner of the shop, was only 18 when she took it over. Michel Aloevere takes us to la Detroit Macaron. One of my favorite things I think is just therapeutic part of it. The piping and the mixing and stuff, it's all repetitive but it's just a very relaxing thing. Isabelle Alwort is a talented baker. There's a technique to mixing it, it's not just And her specialty is macarons. They over mix them, they would be flat and you'd have no foot, but since these are made perfectly, one of our girls back here, they have that perfect foot along with the heart shell on top. When I was younger, probably about 10 or 11, my grandma had invited me over and said we're going to try and make macarons and I've never even heard of them. All I knew is they took a really long time and I didn't want to do it. It takes a lot of patience to make but it was a special time with her. It was her love of these sweet meringue French cookies which are crisp on the outside but soft and chewy on the inside that landed her a job here at Lae Detroit Macaron. I was a junior in high school, a friend of mine had shared an article that a macarons shop was opening up just a couple of streets down for me. I reached out to her and so I started working for her in that September. I was one of her first employees. She confessed to the owner, Patty Corquery, that she wanted to own her own bakery. She just didn't anticipate doing so at age 18. About a year in, I kind of got a phone call that changed my life forever. She had reached out and said that she had decided to sell the business, talked with my parents and we met with her and she gave me a really good deal and were able to work things out. Now, three years later, the business is still going strong. It was definitely a surreal experience because it's, This is not a solo job. They sell classic flavors We create tons of different crazy flavors It's fun to just kind of mess around with different ingredients and see if it works. I've always wanted to make macarons so she gave me a crash course on how to pipe the shells for these cherry almond macarons. So I usually In my right hand we'll be doing all the piping. My left hand is just there for a guide. Okay. So what I'll be doing is literally just keeping it above the mat, squeezing it. As soon as I hit that black line, I release and kind of flip your wrist. It's coming out. All right. So right above. Yep. There you go. Squeeze with your right hand. Back and twist off. There you go. Not bad. Okay. Not bad. Not bad. This is excellent. I mean if you've never had a background we'd love to be your first experience. We've got lots of different options of flavors so we hope that In case you want to check it out, the Detroit Macaron is located at 2756 Eveline Street in Hamtranek.
