First responders with Paige Tucker on NBC 26. Firefighters from more than a dozen fire companies as far away as Covington, Georgia, helped McDuffie County work this massive fire at Thompson's Georgia Pacific Plant. It was a scorching hot week in May and crews were dealing with a water shortage. The fire had a major impact in the community beyond the blaze. Georgia Pacific decided not to rebuild the plant. The fire left 100 local employees out of a job. A lot of these people, they're all local employees and they woke up one day and realized they're not gonna have a job the next day. And with that, it's a lot of people just all of a sudden out of work without a plan B. Employees at another local company, Sprint Foods, saw the fire's destruction and spring into action. They wanted to find some way to help. What can we do both quickly and in the long term to try to help? All of our employees are local and we Sprint Foods sells gas and food and they shared both with the Georgia Pacific workers. We can give them a free tank of gas. That'something that we can do quickly. We gave them some free drinks. We had food samples and coupons. Sprint Foods took it a step further too, joining forces with partners and vendors to do a job fair at its Thompson store in the heart of the community affected by the plant fire. Sprint is really big, We hold a lot of different functions, not just job fairs and things Always do the right thing. The help made a difference to their neighbors facing uncertainty. It was just a nice refreshing treat to be able to bless people and they were truly grateful for it. That's easy. We're part of the community, We're right here on the corner. A local company helping local people, we honor Sprint Foods and its team for stepping up in our community. And this is our first location.
